It's all about the schedule.

The first time I went to London, the easiest way was YQR-YYC-LHR; you could fly out of Regina at 8 pm and get on a flight to London at 10 pm. We did it on a Friday night after working all day. Normal work week, airport Friday night, in London for lunch Saturday.

Alas, the timing no longer works. Not that I have any interest of being on an aircraft anytime soon. I'm thinking my next major holiday will probably be a driving holiday to Atlantic Canada. (Sorry, airline industry. )

Sask airports lose 'international' designation

As per a news story this morning on 620ckrm.com, both Regina and Saskatoon have lost their 'International' airport status. According to M.P. Michael Kram, Transport Canada apparently has a list with only 13 Canadian international airports on it, and both Saskatchewan cities are not on it. The link is below for more info, but this would be terrible for those wanting direct flights to winter destinations without having to go to Calgary or Toronto first.

Here is a more in-depth report from cjme.com

Remember that US flights are not "international" according to Canadian aviation law; they're "transborder".

I suspect that this is an administrative list and nothing more. We have to have customs and immigration for inbound transborder flights, and the same service works for inbound international flights. We just don't have scheduled international service, and I'm not sure if we ever have. (Again, labelling US flights as "transborder" not "international".) (Yes, we've had lots of service to sun destinations, but as far as I know, it's always been charters, and not regularly scheduled passenger service where you could just buy a ticket the way you can to Toronto.)

In other words, this may not mean much.

Saskatoon Airport Authority CEO was on news yesterday saying they would be applying for international designation and had no doubts they would meet criteria. Disruption due to covid caused the omission. I believe he said they had until June to apply and meet criteria. Fingers crossed! That would suck if we had no direct flights to sunny destinations once it is safe to go there again.

Westjet flights to Mexico are not actual chartered flights I believe. You can purchase a ticket on a flight to Cancun or PV as if you were purchasing a ticket to Calgary or Toronto. They were considered seasonal, not charter.

This is good news even as annoying as those triangle routes are through Saskatoon & vice versa. They seem to becoming more & more common, which, while I'm not a huge fan, it's better than no flights at all.

Only one way to solve this: time to build a massive airport in Davidson to serve both Regina & Saskatoon.

I don't like them either, but right now while there's really soft air travel demand, anything is an improvement.

Some routes being reinstated @ YQR from WestJet.

Also a brand new service to YLW twice per week starting June.

Great photos!!! Thank you. 👍 ✈

Extending Runways 13-31 would require displaced thresholds; that would be fine. The resultant runway length would be about 10,000'.

Conversely, Runways 08-26 could easily be extended by a mile to the west; ergo, there would be zero need for displaced thresholds.

Glad to see you are still around, SkydivePilot!

Does anyone know when Rise Air will start flying Regina to Saskatoon?

Thanks!!! 👍

Yeah, I'm still kicking! ✈ Operating out of ON now. (I'm damn lucky to still be flying!) It's been a hell of a long time since I have posted here - even though I occasionally peek in. I miss you guys.

"Rise Air." I don't know much about them; however, if there's YQR-YXE service, that'd be great! I'll look into it too. You guys would know more about that than I would.

Damn good thing that the tower didn't close. Almost two months ago, Wayne Mantyka called me up for my input while I was holding in Pickle Lake, ON. He asked me: "Can you be ready in 20 minutes?" Lol!!! (I took a half-assed selfie and that day, I looked like shit.)

There's too much mixed traffic @ YQR; a tower is required for conflict resolution.

Hopefully the aviation industry picks up in Canada. In the U.S., things are improving. 👍

Trying to find flights from YQR-YUL and not seeing anything. Have these been quietly canceled? Does anyone know?
