When were those pictures taken? How long did you work in the WTC before 9/11?

Those were taken when my team went to see our new offices prior to moving in (we were previously at Harborside Financial Centre, across the river in Jersey City). We moved in around summer of 1999.

Talking Twin Towers in Music Video

Video Link

Im sure many have seen this, but thought I'd share here. Depeche Mode performing on top of the Twin Towers in 1990. Really cool 80s beat and the final scene made me emotional. Enjoy

Cool

Aside from the amazing observation deck on top of the old world trade center, I think my favorite part of the Towers was the Plaza down below, which had a really cool fountain and layout. The plaza was very spacious and open, it made the towers seem so much taller and imposing.

Question

On the subject of the old Twin Towers, why exactly did they decide not to rebuild them? I saw the design for the Twin Towers II which would have built them safer and strronger than before. It seems many people wanted them rebuilt. I think it would have sent a powerful message of resilience and it's what people deep down would have wanted. I like the new 1 WTC tower design, but am just wondering why we didn't ebuild the towers as they were? If it had been the washington monument destroyed or something I be they would have rebuilt that exactly as it was, so why not the towers?

One book I have says something interesting. It mentions how those of us who wanted the towers rebuilt may have been the losers of an undeclared class war.
Some people felt that rebuilding would be disrespectful somehow, or that never mind their iconic status, the towers and site sucked, and something "better" should be done.

I formally wanted the Twin Towers to be rebuilt, because of their iconic status before they were brought down. They were part of NYC, and they were part of the Lower Manhattan skyline for almost 30 years until those damn terrorists knocked them down.

^Yeah, I was involved with Team Twin Towers and a few other organizations trying to achieve that end.

I loved the towers and visited often including Windows on the World but I will always remember what Paul Goldberger said (pre 9-11 of course): A design so banal it isn't worthy of a bank headquarters in Omaha.

I didn't always agree with Goldberger. Or the other architecture critics. Even if they weren't the best architecture ever, they became icons, beloved by many people the world over. That should have counted for something.

^ Well first off. Are there people working inside the washington monument? Nope. So if it were to be attacked they probably would rebuild it the same way. But the twin towers design wasn't strong. So if they were to build a second twin towers the facade would change and the plaza, along with the core. Which would of changed the appearance.

Ah well, as someone who visits NY fairly often, I would have loved to have seen them rebuild the towers. Sure, they might have not been as asthetically pleasing as the Empire State building or Chrysler building, but they were iconic symbols! That should have indeed counted for something. I will concede that having two new twin towers might seem a bit eerie to many, especially office workers, who could never really forget what happened in the twin towers. So in that sense it might have been a good idea to just start fresh, with newly designed buildings..I do like the new wtc designs..I just miss the towers as I'm sure many do. At least Bin Laden is dead!
