You found the sign Beaudry....that's fantastic! I had no idea that was a giant fez on top.

Here's another billboard centric photograph.

What mostly caught my eye was the cabin-like greasy spoon called 'The Corner'.

www.corbisimages.com

I'm still driving the google-mobile around trying to figure out which corner this is. (there's also a liquor store....you can see the blade sign by the stoplight)

-it's obviously in the vicinity of the old Republic Studios.

It probably goes without saying at the moment that I've omitted some images from this Julius Shulman photoset. It's "Job 1654: Jones and Emmons, Sascha Brastoff's Ceramics (Los Angeles, Calif.),1954".

Here's the structure at the right of the picture above.

Initially, I didn't realize that the wall with the name on it was at the end of a section that floated on narrow supports. This is a detail view from the side.

Now we get to see the factory, complete with stairs to the observation platform.

The observation platform turned out to be smaller than I expected.

There are plenty of examples of Sascha Brastoff's work online. This shot shows a display area with some ceramic pieces.

Unfortunately, this is the only color image in the set.

I'll finish the Shulman photos with this shot looking over the outdoor display area.

All from Getty Research Institute

Here's the building permit for the slightly later addition of a new sales office. As you can see, the address was 11520 W Olympic Boulevard.

Online Building Records

I can't see a demo permit, but there was an application to use the site as a Christmas tree lot in 1980. The current building (below), with the address 11500 W Olympic Boulevard, seems to have been built in 1981.

This understatement made me laugh, HossC!

I think the "greasy spoon" was on the corner of Ventura Boulevard and Radford Avenue. I posted the aerial below when we were looking for Eatons on Ventura back in October. 'The Corner' might be the building under the copyright message, across the street and to the right of the restaurant I originally arrowed.

The address is actually very close to Laurel Canyon Boulevard. I'm pretty sure that the building I've arrowed on this 1952 aerial is Eatons. It looks like there was a circular drive-in on the corner of Ventura and Laurel Canyon Boulevards.

And, E_R, since you mentioned the Earl Carroll Theater and Beaudry mentioned MONA, here's the famous Earl Carroll neon,
in a different, slightly angled photo, than the one I posted previously: HERE.

From a January KCET story -- HERE -- titled "The Best Places to See Neon in Los Angeles."

The area has changed enormously, but the building, circled above, still stands.

The front of the building faces Purdue Avenue.

I'm very close to my first cousins so this is especially icky to me. It's almost like marrying your brother or sister.

His credentials..

I found this once and can't find it again.

Miss Velma is also known as Dr. Velma Jagger.......but without as many doctorates as her husband.

At the 2:10 mark in this video you can watch Rev. Jaggers stagger across the stage in his high heeled shoes. He's Prince, Liberace and Little Richard all rolled into one. Photo shows Jaggers on his church stage called the Golden Altar.

The Earl Carroll Vanities and Moulin Rouge in the mid-to late '60s became the Hullabaloo and Kaleidoscope music venues -where many notable bands played - and later the Aquarius Theatre where the stage play Hair played - with Jennifer Warren in a lead role. The Fool painted the Aquarius in its distinctive style.

Here's a link to The Fool's work, including the Aquarius:

Slauson Slim, I was going to ask you if you knew anything about a place called Maverick Flats.

https://www.tumblr.com/search/los%20angeles%20clubs

Just before posting I thought I'd check out the address; lo and behold the place is still there and still in business!

It's just a few doors down from the old Bank of America we discussed a while back

the red arrow points to Maverick Flat's sign

*We still haven't found a photo of when it was an actual B of A.

Here are the three venues you mentioned Slauson Slim

Hullabaloo Club in 1966.

What's up with this vacant lot? I don't remember seeing that before. (old aerial....maybe....Hossc)

Kaleidoscope Club in 1968

While looking for the above images, I found a rare color photograph of the Earl Carroll Theater in the 1940s.

And here's a night-time view when it was the Moulin Rouge.(late 1950s) -I hadn't noticed that Mr. Sennes covered up the second story windows with a billboard.

Here's the only one that I haven't been able to place in my timeline.

Does anyone know when the Earl Carroll Theater was affiliated with CBS?

old file of mine

*we might have seen several of these images on NLA in the past.

Is that really in his novel?

Oh wait, now I remember. He was talking about a different Velma, the sexy one......the sister.

Not this vision in ruffled taffeta.

She dangles from a wire in this one!

"In my brief venture into the land of Miss Velma I was unable to come up with a photograph of the actual Universal World Church.
This seems a bit strange since the building had to be HUGE to hold all her props, her ego, and that three and a half ton tree of life." 12/28/2011

Thanks for refreshing my Little Velma memories Earl. I had forgotten all about her.

It looks like the whole block was still empty after the NBC Studios were demolished. The view below is from 1964.

Here are the Langdon and Wilson Offices, sandwiched between the Gaylord Apartments and the Mona Lisa Restaurant on Wilshire Boulevard. See more about the Mona Lisa in GW's recent post #33783. It's Julius Shulman's "Job 4368: Langdon and Wilson, Langdon and Wilson Offices (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1968".

I've mixed the color and black & white images together, but left out duplicates and the arty exterior shots. The next two photos show the reception area.

Now back to color for this view of a corridor.

It's a shame they didn't have wooden ceilings - these offices just aren't brown enough .

At least they have pretty good views.

Anyone recognize the model on the right?

They seem to be discussing the same model here.

All from Getty Research Institute

Sadly (as discussed in GW's post), the Mona Lisa building has gone, but the rest of the immediate view hasn't changed much.
