Carbon Footprints of World Cities

Earlier today, I read that Forbes mentioned the Paris mayor, Anne Hidalgo as one of the most involved influential character in the fight against climate change.
So, here goes...

https://citycarbonfootprints.info/

The most interesting field in their table is footprint per capita, in tons of CO2.
It's true that as a major urban area on the global stage, Paris performs well in that respect. You can't even find it in the top 500 per capita, which is astonishing.
Hidalgo upsets a lot of people over here, but fact is the results of her somewhat annoying policies appear pretty good in that matter of having respect for the environment.
Rome, Italy does even better than Paris. It must be something with their Dolce Vita.

I didn't expect Moscow's per-capita emissions to be even lower than ours. It must be related to the Russian overall standard of living, which is low as well.

Unsurprisingly, North Americans don't seem to actually care so much...
The most stylish and advanced today being both wealthy and clean to the environment.

I am not 100% sure but they seem to have mislabled Windsor as "Detroit" and Quebec City as "Iqaluit" so I have changed these labels accordingly, so keep that in mind.

Coordinates 43.9, -79.1 appears to be Pickering-Ajax, Ontario and 38.0, -121.3 Stockton, California, 40.3, -111.7 Orem-Provo so I have changed that label as well.

How on earth would Hong Kong be the worst offending city on earth in size of carbon footprint? The average Hong Kong resident probably lives in a 300 square foot apartment in a 50 story highrise.

I would of though LA would of been at the top of the list. Surprising info.

My thinking is that the topography plays a big role, just like some of the places within desert environments.

Mountains in the sense trapping the flow of heavier emissions, and deserts due to the trap effect at night but release of emissions during the day. Soil dynamics.

It does reference an emission type that is indirect, so more biproducts of industry. Those molecules tend to be heavier as emission derivatives. Could lead to higher ppm when measured in those areas along with the environment and topography playing a role in concentrating it.

I guess with LA, now thinking about it, the industry is much more regulated. Unlike some of the areas at the top.

Hong Kong's high emissions might be due to its isolation, meaning longer distances and more energy consumed for the transport of people and goods. You can see Singapore is up there as well.

Chinese cities in general dominate the list, possibly due to China's heavy reliance on coal power, so Hong Kong is not exactly an outlier, being one of four Chinese cities in the top 10.

How on earth would Hong Kong be the worst offending city on earth in size of carbon footprint? The average Hong Kong resident probably lives in a 300 square foot apartment in a 50 story highrise.
One would need to take a long hard look at the methodology to figure out what's going on there. But at this point I can't think of any explanation as to how the ranking could be correct.

Although being one of the few fully-developed cities in a tropical region could play into it since they'd need - and can afford - a lot of a/c which could be exasperated by the urban heat island effect due to the high density. So if the power mostly comes from coal, that would be an issue.

Thanks for editing the table with the code tag, Doady.
Idk how to do this.

Tbf Chinese cities 'dominate' the list from top to bottom due to how many there are in the country (for example Tianjin, pop 14.5 million is several tiers below in carbon footprint size than Copenhagen, the world's most liveable city). Noticed many at the top are in the coal belt of China in the north, eg Inner Mongolia and Gobi desert.

I'm also flummoxed by how HK comes top too, the world's densest city (if you take away the 80% that's countryside and mountain), with the world's best public transport network that virtually the whole population relies on, and far fewer cars per capita.

Maybe it's the cost of transporting things from Mainland China across the border (everything from loo roll to water)? Or something to do with the fact it's one of the world's busiest ports?

Could Shenzhen be counted as HK?

I doubt it, different city entirely plus there's a border in between. Population's correctly listed at 6m, if it included SZ it would be over 20m.

California's regulation would be strict in that matter of environment. Possibly the best or worst (depending on your views) in the US, or so I read.
They have a reputation for often being innovative and even having good ideas sometimes.
Lol, it's no secret.

Power production must be the main key. My country, France is heavily nuclearized. Roughly 70% of electricity would be produced by nuclear power plants over here.
Local environmentalists of the left wing don't like it (they don't like anything much anyway) because of waste and potential safety issues, but it is still relevant for being both highly productive and low emissions.

They also work on renewables, like every developed country does today, but it's not productive enough to fulfill power demand yet.
So yeah, we still have to rely on the nuclear stuff.

Instinctively I’m skeptical that these things are quantifiable enough to be ranked, but I’m glad to see LA so low. Everyone looks at the smog and thinks Angelenos pollute more than everyone else rather than the geography of the place being trapped in by mountains and keeping it from dissipating like in most other cities, even journalists take it as a fact for an angle when writing climate change and they should know better.

For those who are interested, here is LA's municipal utility "power content label" breaking down all sources of the city's electric power. Fun fact: the percent of total energy derived from nuclear is the same as that derived from wind.

Mystery again - Hong Kong has 1/3 the average US carbon imprint, yet is listed as highest in the world in the other graphs

Wow, very good job, USA, although progress seems to have stagnated ever since Biden took office.

I would say good job to Netherlands as well, but no longer being the second worst in the world isn't exactly a high bar to clear.

Is the carbon tax in Canada really working? These numbers would be very useful to Pierre Poilievre. Don't show him Ukraine's numbers though...

It might rather be the aftermath of Trump's administration policy. I didn't hear the Dems advocate any coal mining revival in the US, while Trump did it.
It's only a matter of priority. Trump seems to think anything is good enough to boost the economy, while some others would rather enforce some restrictions to push environmentally-friendly development further.

They have to suggest a reliable plan to coal workers anyway, if there's still any in the US.
I think there are still some coal mines in a couple of states. I'd seen a report about that in West Virginia or some place. Workers were worried about their future, so the Dems would have to bring an answer to their well-founded concerns.

That's Netherlands Antilles not the Netherlands.

It has to be the shipping. That's why Singapore is up there too.

That said, I'd expect worse from Panama. But I don't know how well this model localizes emissions to where they actually happen as much as it assigns responsibility for emissions that may be happening elsewhere.
