Cool, I didnt know thats where that Walmart was going in. DC is incredible, I need to visit it someday. I hope at some point in the future, Houston can see that kind of density.

^ Seems mostly right, although the big lot in the heart of the Financial District (Winthrop Square) is not actually a surface lot, it's a short 2-story garage. It's still blight, but for consistency's sake it shouldn't count here.

Regarding Boston, the area across the bridges to the right where the Google logo appears is an industrial area that has been cleared for new development. It isn't what I would call downtown. The area to the left across the bridges is Cambridge - also, not downtown & not Boston. I think that area of Cambridge has a lot of property that was industrial as well. In both cases I mention, not part of typical downtown property.

The part in the middle with virtually NO parking lots is downtown. Thanks for putting this together.

I wouldn't be surprised if Pittsburgh has one of the most solid downtowns in it's weight class of 1m-3m sized metros.

@ Monkey Ronin: Great job, but it looks like you overlooked perhaps the single most obnoxious parking lot in Boston. It's on Newbury St @ Dartmouth St, in the heart of Back Bay, and it is NEVER going to be developed as long as humans rule this earth.

As long as you ignore the massive lots surrounding Heinz Field and the hopefully soon to be redeveloped Civic Arena, I agree with you. The only other areas with substantial surface lots are just above the Convention Center toward the Strip District, but that's really about it.

Thanks for the Pittsburgh parking lot map, MonkeyRonin! As I said, not many lots outside of the Civic Arena area, the Heinz Field area, and the area between the Convention Center and the Strip District. All I really missed was Station Square, and that's not even really downtown since it's across the Mon River...

I have a feeling the surface lots around Station Square will be developed in the next few years, as will several of the lots around Heinz Field. I'd like to see a few of the lots above the Convention Center become structured parking, so the rest of the current lots can be used for future development as well.

The great thing about Oakville is that there are no parking lots or parking garages on Lakeshore Road. Most of the parking is a block or two north of Lakeshore, and there is a small municipal lot a block south of Lakeshore.

Actually since our food cart craze took off, I have found myself not wanting some surface lots to be redeveloped because I would hate to lose some of the cart culture Portland has created for itself.
In Toronto food trucks just park at the side of the road.

the ones in Portland are different. They aren't trucks, they're "carts" that are parked in one location permanently. There are mobile food trucks, too, but the ones he's talking about that ring the parking lots in downtown and in empty lots throughout the city aren't the food truck type... some may be trucks or vans, but they don't move. Most of them are something like trailers or wooden shacks.

Here's a quick attempt at Philly. A local could probably do much better, but you get the idea: A scattering of tiny ones in the central city, with the standard bunches on the more industrial fringes.

True, and east of the Anacostia River is full of them as well, not to mention the absolutely massive ones around the Pentagon. But OP asked for downtown.

These are great! Out of curiosity, do you make these at a certain zoom level (anyone who's made more than 1 of these)?
