Just get it fixed up, nice. And be quick about it.

This proposal is not going to change the street, but having this building being more than a rotting shell is itself a grand achievement for Barrington.

That's the problem there has been nothing quick about this site at all.

I'm starting to be inclined with Keith and ILH because it has been what 20 years of nothing.

The remains should have been knocked down immediately after the fire. The usual suspects got the city to spring for steelwork to shore up the front facade. That is what we have been stuck with for 20+ years, not even a building. A whole generation knows it only as a Potemkin Village-like curiosity, not as a vibrant part of downtown's main street. How ridiculous is that? It is a perfect illustration of the challenges Halifax faces with intransigence and relentlessly clinging to the past even when there is nothing left to cling to. No wonder we desperately needed a new brand.

The article mentions that the developer would like to start construction in early June. He's applied for a construction permit.

This will be great for the street. Aside from the George Street lot, Barrington will be pretty consistent once NFB is done.

it will be a nice street scape when that row of historic buildings are all fixed up. I remember going into the Attica building to the south of the NFB building 30 years ago, there was an antique store there; the floors were very spongy and felt like they would collapse, what a nice fix up they did there.

holy smokes I didn't think this would ever happen. Is the plan to have retail shops on the street front? What I saw of the plans didn't look very retaily

Yes, about 4,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor.

It will have to be a spectacular design to make this blight on the block into anything welcoming.

On page 5 of this thread there's a photo from 1950 or so showing the building with more of a ground floor storefront type of setup.

Here's a photo I took back in 2001 or so when the building next door was being renovated:

Another photo that shows how the building fits into the streetscape: http://www.takeoneatlantic.com/files...ton-street.jpg

Word from HRM is that construction permits were issued this week for this project. Sounds like it's ago.

Even then, those 3 ugly buildings were a real drag on that part of the street.

I've seen that photo a lot, but I never noticed what a wacky first-storey facade NFB had at that time.

Anyway, I've been losing hope in this project since summer seemed to be coming and going without any apparent site work. So this is cheering me up.

Note, the Tip Top building seems to be under construction in the picture.

What is with all this NFB stuff?

Can we please go back to calling it the St. Mary's Young Men's Total Abstinence and Benevolent Society Hall, a much more catchy title that rolls off the tongue.

Respect the heritage, people.
