It's always interesting to me, how locals feel about the Vegas strip or living near it. Is this right near the strip?

Not really. It is next to down town Las Vegas. Most locals tend to avoid the strip.

I moved to Vegas in 2014. Prior to that I visited Vegas approximately 6 times in my life and only ever visited and stayed on the Strip. That is all I knew of Vegas - huge casinos and hotels, gambling, flashing lights, loud music, electronic billboards, people handing things out on the Strip everywhere.

When I moved to Vegas in 2014 I realized that Vegas is just like any other city. It has family-oriented neighborhoods, parks, local restaurants and fun things to do and locals avoid the Strip at all costs. I've lived 15 minutes away from the Strip for the last 5 years and can honestly say I've only gone to the Strip maybe 6 or 7 times. So approximately once a year.

I have heard this but why is that? I have seen both sides of Vegas but why do locals dislike the strip?

When I left Las Vegas last year, the Legislature approved $1 million in seed money to build an art museum in Las Vegas, last big city to get one, and there were other parties involved in raising money for the museum. Anyone know where that stands right now? I keep looking at the Vegas compilation hoping to see a design for it, but so far, nothing!

Resorts World

Took the wife to Vegas over Memorial Day weekend and took these photos from the sidewalk at the corner of Las Vegas Blvd and Convention Center Drive (near Tacos El Gordo).

I think as a visitor to Vegas you go where all the action and excitement is, which is The Strip. You don't care about the traffic, crowded sidewalks and long lines because you're on vacation and only there for a few days.

Most locals (A lot of locals work on The Strip but the majority do not) do not work on The Strip and they see it as a crowded street where they will get caught up in traffic. Once you live here you realize that most of what you get on the strip you can get elsewhere. Good food, movies, some forms of entertainment, etc....You can find all of this around Vegas, not just on the strip. It makes going to the strip a hassle when you deal with drunk tourists, traffic, long lines. May as well go to the suburbs and find similar things.

It's a weird question to ask, too, since locals in cities with big tourism industries generally avoid the tourist traps. You don't see New Yorkers lined up to go to the top of the Empire State Building.

My dad lived out in Vegas for about a decade. The only time we ever went to the Strip was when we had family in from out-of-town or on special occasions. When the adults did go out for the night it'd be at one of the neighborhood casinos (the Sante Fe, Texas, Palace Station, Orleans, Arizona Charlie's, etc.) or downtown. Another thing a lot of people don't realize - but maybe should since it's out in the Mountain West - is that Vegas has a significant Mormon population. And though this has changed as the city as sprawled out, the Strip isn't really "central" to a lot of areas of the city/urban area. We lived in the city proper; the city is entirely north of the Strip, and most of it is quite a bit northwest of it.

Haven't lived out there in years, but with the more expensive and higher-class resorts going up, I imagine the Strip seems even more disconnected from the "neighborhoods" than it did when I was there. Like any tourist town, the touristy things generally aren't for the locals.

There's so much more to Vegas than the Strip. Yes, the Strip has it's unfair share of celebrity-helmed restaurants (nearly all of them imported from other cities like NY, LA, Chicago, SF, Miami), but the two best meals I've had in Vegas were well off the strip (Lotus of Siam and Raku).

LV City Council votes to move forward with 180-day negotiation period for MLS stadium

180-day negotiation period with the Renaissance Companies for MLS stadium at Cashman site approved by City Council.

Fourth rendering shows Maryland Pkwy curving in the foreground and Lions Memorial Park in the background. Not sure why the third one has Oscar’s and the Plaza in it lol (maybe just an ad on the marquee but tower sure does look a lot like the Plaza). Also I like that there’s solar on the majority of the low rise.

^^^^^^

In the last rendering, at the bottom of the post, does this also include all of those mid rises on the left of the stadium with about 4 high rises (looks residential)? Quite nice fillers if so.

Yeah those are proposed on what’s now Cashman Convention Center and parking lots between Cashman Field and LVB.

What a pipe dream, to imagine housing around Cashman Field, a soccer stadium, and with not one light rail line in Las Vegas.. Having lived there for 22 years, and seeing plenty of pipe dreams, that area isn't even suited for housing. First things first, get some mid rises and high rises in Symphony Park and the area south of downtown, like a couple more Juhl like developments. And they may as well call it the Oscar stadium, as Oscar Goodman has been pushing the idea of a soccer stadium for over 20 years. His original plan was to build the arena in Symphony Park, and at least I'm glad it's not being build there as that should be set aside for housing.
