I don't believe we've seen this fascinating photograph on NLA. (even if we have...it deserves a second look )

eBay. Scroll right----> to see Sol's Liquor Store.

I believe this is the intersection of Sunset Blvd. and N. Alameda Street.

The Padre Vineyard Co. was located at 845 N. Alameda Street. (the building is still there)

gsv

If you look closely, the Padre Vineyard Co. 'ghost' sign is still visible. (barely)

We've visited this building before:
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=26014

As most of you know, the building on the corner of Sunset (now Cesar Chavez) and N. Main is still there as well. (Italian Hall)

gsv

detail / eBay

I believe you can also see a small portion of Fort Moore Hill above the DBF billboard.

The center's pool is now closed...sadly.

Facility Features: Auditorium, baseball diamond (lighted), basketball courts (unlighted/outdoor), childrens play area, community room, indoor gym (without weights), picnic tables, soccer field (lighted).

Thanks for the update CBD. Such lofty aspirations makes it all the more sad.

another photo of Perry's

NoirCityDame did a post trying to figure out some conflicting information she had: claiming Sardi’s was where Henry’s used to be; but that couldn’t be right. 6321 where Henry’s was, opened as the new location of Perry’s Brass Rail in March 1934.

Your press photo above, E_R, is dated 1933 and we see Perry's Brass Rail as well as the blade sign of Henry's. Perry's "address" unfortuantely isn't on the press information, but, apparently, if these dates are correct, Perry's Brass Rail moved from the location in your photograph to where Henry's was located, at 6321 Hollywood Blvd.

The L.A.T. ad in NoirCityDame's post would indicate this: It moved three doors east!

Here is a 1933 Bruce Torrence photo dated 1933 that shows Henry's. On the very left, it's hard to tell if Perry's Brass Rail is there, but the design of the storefront to the right of it matches the design to the right of the Perry's sign in your photo. (Sardi's is under construction.)

Perry's didn't last long at either address. NoirCityDame indicates that by 1936 it was the Weiss Cafe.

By 1940, that 6321 address was completely rebuilt by Charles Lee into the Admiral Theater, currently the Vine Theater.

Check out NoirCityDame's post about Perry's Brass Rail, Henry's Restaurant, Weiss Cafe, the Admiral, Sardi's and Chi Chi's HERE!

For some perspective of this location, here is an undated LAPL photo of this corner, at Hollywood and Vine. I'd say c.1930. Henry's is there, the Chinese Garden is to the right. Where the first Perry's location will be looks to have a two-word sign, the words beginning with J and S. The Pantages is in the distance to the right.

LAPL
I found another view of Perry's, in the State Library collection, lurking in the background of this early '30s view of Gibson's shoes.

Gibson's was 6329 Hollywood Blvd.

Night view from the same series with the neon going:

The building can be seen from across the street in this c. Dec 1937 Herman Schultheis view (LAPL collection). Isabel Pickrell Inc. Hats for Women was at 6325-1/2 then:

The main building is easier to see in this June 2012 view. Many of the attractive details have gone, and it's nearly hidden by trees, but the basic structure remains.

GSV

I also found an article on abbottandcostello.net which starts with the question "Is Lou's Foundation run from the heart... or for the publicity?". It has a lot of background information and some more pictures.

WOW!!!! I've been to meetings here, to work on saving Wyvernwood, the first Garden Apartment community, from 1939, which is treatened with demolition. It's adjacent to this. I could tell it had good bones, but this is beautiful!

Interesting Link, HossC. From "Dentists and doctors are on call free of charge for needy youngsters. Children suffering malnutrition get free vitamins", to "LAPD stop-in center. [random checking for drugs]". (CBD). Where did it all go wrong?

Cheers,
Jack

Thanks for all the follow-ups on the Lou Costello Youth Foundation. It's much appreciated.

I first came across this example of "Nautical Moderne" a few months ago while 'driving' the google-mobile up San Fernando Blvd.

gsv

It's located at 3200 N. San Fernando Blvd. and California Street.

gsv

gsv

Amazingly, the porthole windows still pivot open.

detail

Yet on closer inspection, I noticed that three portholes and two rectangular windows appear to have been covered up.

'ghost' windows along N. San Fernando Blvd. side of the building.

gsv

After numerous google searches, I found this photograph that shows the windows before they were covered over. (it appears that it wasn't that long ago)

http://www.citysearch.com/profile/61..._labs_inc.html

I'm hoping someone can dig up vintage photographs of the place....and additional information.

Today, the building is home to Micro Quality Labs.

Here is a great nightclub photograph of a frolicsome pair in downtown Los Angeles, 1945.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/December-194...item20fd0d6f26

...and where was it taken?

None other than the much-discussed Waldorf Cellar.

A sudden downpour!

"Ventura Blvd. at Woodman, 1950s San Fernando Valley"

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/562950022142005828/

It appears that many of the buildings are still standing.

gsv

Even the house (& the more modern building next to it) is still there.

I've seen this architectural style called "transportation motif." It was the fashion for making buildings resemble ships or aircraft, since these were the most futuristic technologies of the early 20th century. The famous Los Angeles Coca-Cola bottling plant is one of the most outstanding examples of the style.
