mSeattle goes to ^Atlanta^

I spent many childhood years an hour or so west of Atlanta but managed only a drive-through or pit-stop. Now I finally got a chance to stay and walk a little bit but it was only a tease for me. There's so much more I didn't have a chance to see. This is from the July 4th weekend. Thankfully they cooled down to upper 80s! I got in late Friday... too tired for photos. My first shot was Saturday morning. I'll be adding photos.

cool set of pics and I know it was a Saturday morning but good gawd where are the people? Except for the last pic at the Olympic Park. Was there some type of event going on?

I think they were lost on the I-285. Beltways are from hell...
There was a big religious convention in town using the Georgia Dome. They were letting out about the time I reached Centennial Park and let me tell you it was 70k or so worth of people and vehicle craziness, so I got out of the way. That, plus I'm not the type who readily points a camera in the face of strangers. I also realized later that the people places are 5 Points (hood) and Midtown (yuppy/guppy/bougie...). I was surprised at how urban Georgia State campus is (what I saw of it). If I get to visit again I will try to spend time on foot in 5 Points and a couple of other areas in the core.

I was pleasantly surprised that there were non-street-people out and about very late at night and early in the morning.

Here are some more.

I know times are desperate, but it seems like a dude could find a better place than that in which to set up his bed. In any case, it seems kind of risky leaving it there. What if some cocky city employee came through and cleaned house?

Being from Seattle (I assume), I suppose you have probably seen the spot where homeless people routinely sleep across the street from the mission in front of the furniture shop. Of course, those people COULD find a more secluded place to sleep if they were not purposefully staying close to the mission in hopes of getting a bed; but again, when those people wake up in the morning, they usually don't leave their sleeping gear behind. I can't imagine what the person whose bed you photographed was thinking. Perhaps he was hanging around sitting on it and had just gone for a bathroom break or quick bite to eat when you came along.

Thanks for sharing these photos with us. Because of people like you, forums like this, and internet in general, those of us who spend most of the year not travelling have a chance to see the rest of the country (and world) anyway.

Nice shots of a nice city. The streets look a bit empty though.

Here's the last of Saturday's shoot before family time. The light got better and I was recovering from the heat shock from earlier in the day. I've gained much respect for Atlanta. It deserves a man-made river, canal, lake or pond downtown... some more water features. There's great potential for a livable core, not just the convention/big-show events. Saturday night was TV in the hotel and Sunday was all-family stuff, no city photos till 1AM Monday.

Thanks for the shots, but I really hoped you made it out of downtown to see some of the more interesting neighborhoods.

Atlanta is a through-way between Florida and the "Upper South" and Midwest. The freeway system is massive, some of it is understandable given it's place in the country and the national energy and transportation interests in the 1980s-2000s, but a lot of it is unfortunate.

I'm not trying to paint Atlanta as bad or anything. I'm just posting things that I noticed. I actually wanted to get to know Atlanta with as little prejudice as possible. There's a lot of opinion about Atlanta as exceptionally sprawling, but I hope to see personally if it's significantly different from other sunbelt cities. The walk path between my hotel and the Centennial Olympic Park was something of a dead zone at least on the 4th of July weekend. It might be different when Georgia State is in full session.

There is much to Atlanta/Fulton County that I didn't get to see/experience. Family, non-sight-seeing took up a lot of my time.

I did take some pictures at night/early morning. All these are hand-held/manual focus. Accepting donations for better night photo equipment.

I miscalculated the time in my earlier comment. These are taken near 3AM Atlanta time the night/morning-after the 4th of July activity that might have taken place. I returned to the hotel after family time about an hour outside the city. I hope I have better night time access to downtown and close-in neighborhoods on my next visit. There were quite a few cars going between downtown and midtown, but my camera doesn't get excited over cars.

It was a long night and had to check-out the next morning and get to the airport by 5PM. Crammed in a photo walking tour and drive-tour before getting lost on I-285 trying to get back to my relatives' place for them to drop me off at the airport.

I may be mistaken, but it's doubtful that he was trying to take shots of people. It looks to me like the photos were of buildings, and often photographers (sometimes subconsciously) wait until people have passed to take the photo. Other than that, he stated that some of the photos were taken in the early morning, so that could be another reason for the emptiness.

Having lived in Downtown Atlanta, the sidewalks certainly aren't empty.

I'm curious as to what you see as suburban in the photos? I didn't catch much of anything that looked at all suburban.

Nice photos...
