That's the Roxie Theater to its right.

Here's 512 S. Broadway today.

When I took a LAVA Sunday tour of Broadway last summer, I recall Beaudry pointing out that this was one of the many buildings in DTLA designed by Robert Brown Young. A very handsome design for being so utilitarian.

If you want to watch something really good—shameless plug (I don't feel bad "promoting" here since it's a free event, and I'm not getting paid)—come to this, since it's up the collective alley of a gang of NLAer's, I'd reckon: an hour or so showing slides of and talking about Richardsonian Romanesque in Old LA.

Enough already. When is this place gonna open?
I think we (NLA) should meet together and "enjoy" whatever they'll offer soon after re-opening.
NO! We should get first dibs, special treatment and ceremony.
Please see to that E_R.

below: Here it is larger, so it's easier to see the clues.

I am still trying to read the proprietor's name in that arched area above Shoes, Harness Repairing & Undertaker/Embalmer.

Frederick H. Mason appears in the 1900 census in Rowland Township. He is listed as a harness maker. There is no street address listed for him in that census. It does indicate that he had a wife, Edna and a young son, Hillard, who was five at the time of the 1900 Census. He does not appear in Los Angeles County before that, although he might be in the missing 1890 census. Perhaps that is Hillard in the picture, sitting on the porch.

Rowland was part of what became Covina, so that would tie into what others have found.

-thanks for the additional information oldstuff!

So this might be little Hillard. (my original guess of 1880s for the date of the photo seems to be way off).....It's probably 1900

I don't recall seeing the building in it's original state. -thanks Beaudry. It was a beauty.

To be honest, I've never liked the oversized 'tongue depressors' that were added to the first floor of Clifton's.

At least they didn't go for the XTL tongue depressors like the building below.

Does anyone have a photo of this small classical building before this weak attempt at modernization.

That is right. The first building, by architects Lewis E. Wilson and Wayne McAllister, was a sit down restaurant. Across the street, self-serve takout food was available.

I don't believe we've seen this establishment on NLA.

The Empire Café Cocktail Lounge, Pico at Alvarado.

ebay

(someone has written 1936 on the cover)

ebay

"Free Parking At 124_(3?) S. Alvarado Street, S.O.S Garage."

I wonder how far the garage was from the café? -and what does S.O.S stand for?

Hillard Mason was born in October of 1894. The pictures of his father's harness shop would have been taken prior to 1900 as he would have been six in that year, depending on the month when the picture was taken. He looks smaller than six in the photo, more like four or so which would put the picture around 1896 or so. All this is presuming that the boy in the photo is Hillard.

His parents were married in Los Angeles in 1893.

This has to be one of the most beautiful bars I've ever seen.

one question:
Why do you think it was called the Coliseum Bar when it was located way over on 4th Street?

I just found this a few minutes ago on ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Los-Angeles-...item541946c077

"35mm Slide, Viaduct and San Pedro Street, Los Angeles, ca. 1957"

It makes a great companion photograph with the photo below that I posted a couple weeks ago.
I believe that's the same building on the left in both photographs.

I probably should know, but what is this large gray building?

I could have sworn we'd seen this picture before, but a quick search turned up no previous mentions. The Bel-Rio Hotel Apartments were at 711 S Rampart Boulevard. It look like this picture is dated 1978.

eBay

Despite the earthquake worries in the caption, the building is still there, although it now seems to be called Greenwich West.

GSV

The old name still survives as a ghost sign on the gable wall, although I had to go back to 2009 to get a shot that wasn't obstructed by trees.

GSV

Before I finish with the Bel-Rio, I thought I should do a little digging to find out how old the building is. A couple of property sites give a build date of 1924. The original name seems to have been the Blasdel Arms, which appears in several of the CDs up until 1942. Imagine my surprise when I took the Googlemobile around to Hoover Street and found a ghost sign with the Blasdel Arms name still visible on the back of the building.

I don't know what it's called, but it's still there. The closest I got to a name was a couple of the City Directories which refer to it as the 6th & San Pedro Building (where do they get these names from?).

GSV

It seems to have retained a fair amount of its first floor detailing (I assume it's original).

I didn't bother with the google-mobile because I honestly didn't expect it to be there.

Needless to say, it's a pleasant surprise. I'm sure someone will be able to dig up some more information on the building.

Unfortunately, this is no improvement on the name:
