Boulevard Mall nets 31,000 square-foot aquarium

The Boulevard Mall has landed some unusual tenants in its makeover bid, but its latest catch is really fishy.

The Sansone Cos.’ turnaround project on Maryland Parkway has signed a lease with Sea Quest Aquarium to open a 31,000 square-foot, interactive attraction that will let visitors feed caimans and swim with stingrays, among other activities.

Making tracks: Light-rail proposal for Maryland Parkway is moving forward

Regardless of what happens with light rail on the Las Vegas Strip, plans that could produce a similar system just a bit to the east are moving full speed ahead.

The Regional Transportation Commission held a series of public gatherings this week to collect feedback about developing either urban light rail or bus rapid transit on and near Maryland Parkway between downtown Las Vegas and McCarran International Airport. Officials seem inclined to support the light rail option, should the necessary funding be available — and they’re not waiting to see whether the transit technology will come to the Strip as well.

In-N-Out is opening its first location on the Las Vegas Strip

This’ll be welcome news to the millions of Las Vegas visitors who hail from east of the Rockies (well, except for those from Dallas): Caesars Entertainment Corporation has announced that In-N-Out Burger — the iconic West Coast chain that inspires envy in much of the rest of the land for burgers made from pure beef chuck ground in its own facilities, french fries hand-cut while you watch and shakes made from real ice cream — is opening its first outlet on the Las Vegas Strip, at The Linq Promenade.

LAS VEGAS — Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis was back in Las Vegas on Friday, and it wasn’t for April Fools. He toured UNLV’s Sam Boyd Stadium and evaluated whether the school could serve as a temporary home for the NFL team if a deal is ultimately reached to construct a new football palace in Sin City.

His attendance on the tour was revealed after a photo was tweeted showing Davis walking with UNLV heavyweights — Sands Casino chairman Sheldon Adelson has proposed the construction of a 65,000-seat stadium that would be shared between the Raiders and UNLV Rebels football team.

Mike Newcomb, executive director of Sam Boyd Stadium, said the 90-minute tour went well, and that Davis left with an overall positive feeling of his team playing football games at the venue. “They’re really excited about Las Vegas,” Newcomb said of the Raiders. “Mr. Davis had never been to Sam Boyd before, and I think he was surprised and excited about how nice it was.”

MGM celebrates opening of the Park entertainment district

MGM Resorts International on Monday celebrated the opening of its Park dining and entertainment district, which officials praised for bringing a new kind of public space to the bustle of the Las Vegas Strip.

CEO Jim Murren, Gov. Brian Sandoval and others kicked off the Park’s debut with a news conference and ribbon cutting this morning in advance of the $100 million development’s opening to the public later Monday afternoon.

The Park features a series of restaurants alongside a lengthy stretch of landscaped open space between New York-New York and Monte Carlo, leading customers from the sidewalk of Las Vegas Boulevard back to the new 20,000-seat T-Mobile Arena, which opens Wednesday.

With no new gambling space and an emphasis on the outdoor environment, the Park continues a trend on the Strip away from traditional casino development and toward nongaming attractions. Caesars Entertainment’s Linq promenade, the accompanying High Roller observation wheel and the Grand Bazaar Shops in front of Bally’s have taken similar approaches.

T-Mobile Arena lives up to the hype

Believe everything you’ve heard. While there was plenty of hype about tricked-out T-Mobile Arena leading up to Wednesday’s opening concert headlined by The Killers, fact is, the venue was designed with the fan experience in mind.

Those who arrived when the doors opened just after 6 p.m. were rewarded with easy access and entry (this wasn’t the TSA screening checkpoint at McCarran), ample amenities and beers priced between $10 and $13, depending upon your tastes.

And no lines. For anything — bathrooms, bars or food.

Needless to say, it was a shining moment for Las Vegas and The Killers. The homegrown act was more than deserving of being the first band to get top billing in the Strip’s stunning new arena. Since forming 14 years ago, the Killers have climbed to top to become one of the most celebrated acts to ever come out of Las Vegas, and this was their moment.

Wynn Resorts announces major Las Vegas expansion project

Steve Wynn intends to transform the golf course behind his Las Vegas resorts into an expansive new development that includes a 38-acre lagoon attraction accompanied by a 1,000 room-hotel tower, a small casino, restaurants, nightlife and meeting space.

Wynn, chairman and CEO of Wynn Resorts Ltd., revealed the plans during a presentation to investors in Las Vegas on Wednesday. Tentatively titled Wynn Paradise Park, the development would be built on 130 acres that are currently home to the golf course just east of Wynn Las Vegas and Encore.

The project does not appear to have a firm price tag yet, but Wynn indicated that it could cost as much as $1.6 billion. It still needs approval from his company’s board of directors.

As described by Wynn, Paradise Park will function largely as an entertainment attraction centering on the lagoon, which will have a white sand beach, boardwalk and an island in the middle. Guests could water ski, paddle board and parasail during the day, and at night they could see a fireworks show that Wynn described as “just like Disney.”

Customers would pay admission to enter the attraction, Wynn said.

Aside from the aquatic options, the park will also come with an additional 260,000 square feet of meeting space with waterfront views, comfortable hotel rooms with “a separate bedroom, living room and balcony,” and “a variety of restaurants,” according to a statement from Wynn Resorts.

Announcement of the project comes as Wynn Resorts also moves forward with plans for a large luxury retail complex, Wynn Plaza, on its property near Las Vegas Boulevard. The development will include more than 75,500 square feet of luxury retail space, and it’s expected to debut in fall 2017.

Wynn Resorts planning $1.5B expansion for Las Vegas Strip property

Wynn Resorts is considering a 1,000-room expansion at its Strip property centered around a 38-acre lagoon that would host water skiing, paddle boarding and parasailing by day and fireworks displays at night.

The project, tentatively called Wynn Paradise Park, would cost about $1.5 billion to build and open in 2020 if work begins later this year as planned.

Joseph Greff, who wrote the J.P. Morgan investment report on the investment conference, said the new hospitality amenity could capture new customers and nongaming discretionary dollars with the beach activity and water sports activities envisioned on the lake.

He said the project could be reviewed by the Wynn board by the third quarter and, if approved, construction could begin by fall.

Raiders owner Mark Davis to address state panel to discuss proposed stadium, move to Las Vegas

Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis will appear before a state committee later this month to discuss relocating the National Football League team to Las Vegas.

The Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee meets April 28 at UNLV to review tourism-related projects for possible state funding. A 65,000-seat stadium in the Strip resort corridor is among the projects under consideration for recommendation to the Nevada Legislature. Davis will be at the meeting to address the stadium plan and the Raiders’ potential move, a source confirmed Tuesday on condition of anonymity.

The infrastructure committee’s recommendations, due this summer, are not binding.

Mayor: ‘Desert gets its oasis’ with Faraday groundbreaking

Executives for electric car company Faraday Future, suppliers and politicians celebrated the official kickoff to construction on the company’s North Las Vegas manufacturing plant with a Champagne toast Wednesday afternoon. Gov. Brian Sandoval and North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee were among those to address the crowd inside a windowed tent at the site of the future factory surrounded by the vast, mostly empty desert expanses of Apex Industrial Park.

Little new information was revealed at the groundbreaking ceremony, but Faraday hinted at what might be in store for its future, highlighting progress it has made in attracting suppliers, plans for the factory and updates on its timeline to produce a production car within the next couple of years.

Faraday started clearing its land at Apex in late January and closed on its last two parcels of land at the site today, for a total of more than 900 acres. The company expects to begin grading the land, the next step in the construction process, sometime in the second quarter, according to Dag Reckhorn, Faraday’s vice president of manufacturing.

The factory will be a 3.4 million-square-foot facility, with large glass windows, solar panels and smart technology. Ding Lei, a top executive at LeEco, Faraday’s strategic partner, called it “the most advanced auto plant.” It will manufacture Faraday’s first production vehicle.

^^ I don't know if most forum members who post in here actually live in Las Vegas or not but I do live in Las Vegas. It's true what they say - locals never (almost never) go to the Strip. I visited Vegas 4 times before ever living here. Since living here for 2 years now I've been to the Strip maybe 4 times total. I did enjoy watching that video though, it shows the liveliness of the Strip that is going on 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Alon construction details to be revealed in less than two months

Accordingly, I can now reveal that we are less than two months away from the real ground-start of the new hotel Alon to be built by Crown Resorts’ Australian billionaire James Packer, newly engaged to Caesars Palace headliner Mariah Carey, and Las Vegas business executive Andrew Pascal, who has Elaine Wynn as his aunt and was president of Wynn Las Vegas from 2005 to 2010.

Former SLS President Rob Oseland, another former Wynn employee, has joined the Elan team.

The nearly 35-acre property on the former site of Frontier is across from Steve Wynn’s Wynn and Encore and just steps north from Fashion Show mall.

Commission to kick light rail conversations into high gear

When the board of Southern Nevada’s Regional Transportation Commission adopted a major transit plan last week, it gave the green light for officials to get started on certain planning steps related to light rail, according to Tina Quigley, the commission’s general manager.

Quigley told a group of local businesspeople and public officials Wednesday that the board authorized her agency to proceed with what is known as an alternatives analysis. She described the analysis as a “very large community conversation” that will tackle such issues as where light rail tracks should be aligned on the roadways, where the stops should be located and how the system could be funded.

The alternatives analysis is geared toward seeking some amount of federal funding for the light rail system, according to Quigley. She said the process is likely to start sometime in July and could take about 18 months to complete.

Reports: Mark Davis to pledge Raiders move to Las Vegas if domed stadium is built

By BILL BRADLEY and RICHARD N. VELOTTA
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
The Oakland Raiders will seek relocation to Las Vegas if a domed stadium is built here, according to two reports.

Both Sports Illustrated and the Bleacher Report reported Monday that Raiders owner Mark Davis will pledge Thursday to move the team to Southern Nevada if a 65,000-seat stadium is built along Tropicana Avenue near the Strip.

Davis is scheduled to appear Thursday — the same day as the NFL Draft’s first round — at a Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee meeting at UNLV. A plan to build a $1.3 billion domed stadium will be discussed at that meeting.

That could change with the proposed Mars World, for which renderings and loose plans were revealed by space.com in late March. The indoor, colony-like facility is reportedly in funding stages. Executive VP John Spencer is also chief designer, and he brings his perspective as a space tourism/space-themed attraction guru (he assisted in designing Star Trek: The Experience, a Tomorrowland for Trekkies back when the Westgate was the Las Vegas Hilton). If the project secures the Strip-adjacent acreage and $2 billion needed to become a reality, guests could be simulating Mars walks in diminished gravity and staying in a property hotel by 2021.
