Jeju Stone Park Seulmundae Halmang Museum, Jeju, South Korea
Samoo-designed Seulmundae Halmang Museum captures the myths of Jeju Island

Planned as the 2nd phase of Jeju Stone Park, Samoo's Seulmundae Halmang Museum is designed to incorporate the various history, culture, and myth of Jeju Island. The myth of Jeju Island involves a large deity, Seulmundae Halmang, a tall woman who is said to have created Mount Halla with her bare hands.

The story tells how Seulmundae Halmang was making soup for her 500 children when she fell into the pot and died. This soup was then eaten by her sons who, on discovering that their mistake, turned into 500 stones.

A major stone-wall that forms the axis for the museum is placed along the linear site to provide an entrance to the journey of Jeju's mythology.

Museu Brasileiro de Escultura (MuBE) / Paulo Mendes da Rocha

Keep an eye out, or you might miss the Museu Brasileiro de Escultura (a.k.a. MuBE, pronounced MOO-bee). Widely considered the masterpiece of Pritzker Prize-winner Paulo Mendes da Rocha, the building was in fact born out of the desire to have no building at all. When in the 1980s an empty lot in Sao Paulo’s mansion-laden Jardins district was slated to become a shopping mall, wealthy residents successfully lobbied to create a public square instead. To sweeten the deal and ensure the land stayed commercial-free, they hired Mendes de Rocha to create MuBE. Completed in 1995, the 7000-sq-meter museum hunkers down beneath ground level, thus preserving what in Sao Paulo is that rarest of luxuries: a public green space.

Perkins+Will Completes Women’s University in Saudi Arabia

A kingdom notorious for limiting the role of women in the public sphere builds the largest women-only university in the world.

Lamar Anderson
November 5, 2013

If square footage is any indication of power, Saudi Arabia's female students are gaining ground. The new Princess Nora Bint Abdulrahman University (PNU) in Riyadh, which opened its doors in 2011 and completed its final phase earlier this year, is the largest women-only university in the world. With 32 million square feet and capacity for 60,000 students, the school absorbed three existing campuses in Riyadh while more than doubling the number of college slots for women in the city. PNU is so large, in fact, that it has its own K–12 school for the children of faculty, staff, and students.

In a country that sharply limits women's participation in public life, PNU is significant not only as a watershed for women's education, but as an entire micro-economy dedicated to women's advancement because women—about 12,000 of them—also make up the ranks of the faculty, staff, and administrators. "This university is creating a workforce," says Pat Bosch, design principal at Perkins+Will and a member of the project team, which also included David Hansen, Ron Stelmarski, and Allison Williams. "It's about women working for women."

Steven Holl Architects | Nanjing Sifang Art Museum
in Architecture by editor — 4:00 pm | November 11, 20130

Perspective is the fundamental historic difference between Western and Chinese painting. After the 13th Century, Western painting developed vanishing points in fixed perspective. Chinese painters, although aware of perspective, rejected the single-vanishing point method, instead producing landscapes with “parallel perspectives” in which the viewer travels within the painting.

inside apple's cupertino spaceship campus by foster + partners

almost a month after apple had unveiled the scale model of the foster + partners-designed curved glass apple headquarters in cupertino, new renders of the final HQ plan have been uncovered by wired. apple campus 2, which was approved by city officials last month, will sit on a plot of 176-acres of land, accommodating approximately 12,000 employees within the south bay city of 60,000 people. included in the plan is a 260,128 m2 office, research and development building, 1000-seat auditorium, 27,870 m2 research facilities, and a generating plant that will serve as the campus’ primary source of electricity. the net-zero architectural development has been conceived as an environmentally-aware scheme, which will increase the existing landscape on the site by 350%.

Public Safety Building is greenest of the green in the country

By Amy Joi O'Donoghue, Deseret News

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...e-country.html

SALT LAKE CITY — The city's new Public Safety Building is the first building of its kind in the country to earn a "net zero" energy rating, meaning
it generates as much energy as it uses.

Andrea Atencio-Valdez takes a photo of the Salt Lake City skyline from the fourth floor of the Public Safety Building in
Salt Lake City on Friday, July 26, 2013. (Kristin Murphy, Deseret News)

Open for just a few months and home to the city's police and fire departments as well as emergency dispatchers, the 174,000-square-foot building
features a roof canopy of solar panels, an off-site solar farm and takes advantage of natural lighting with abundant and strategically placed windows.

In addition, the building uses LED low energy lights, taps into a solar hot water heating system and its energy use is tracked by a monitoring system...

renzo piano completes expansion of kimbell art museum

with louis kahn’s existing kimbell art museum reaching maximum capacity, a newly built structure, doubling the previous amount of gallery space, has been constructed by renzo piano building workshop. in advance of its november 27th opening, designboom has received a preview of the completed project.

setting up a dialog with kahn’s 1972 masterpiece, piano’s design echoes the original structure through its scale, layout and materials, with concrete, wood and glass used throughout. the colonnaded pavilion provides room for temporary exhibitions as well as classrooms and studios for the museum’s educational department.

Joseph Pschorr Haus building
KUEHN MALVEZZI

Hybrid
The commercial building, which was completed in October 2013, is a hybrid of two different building typologies. On the one hand, the building follows the historic model of a mixed-use building, with the retail functions on the lower two floors and apartments on the top floor which, in this case, has been extended to include a full residential loft. On the other hand, the building represents a development of the department store typology; three separate units are interwoven over four levels in the middle zone and the upper floors are largely shielded from the street. As a result, the building is more open to the city on the top floor and lower two floors, while the design of the elevations of the middle floors is more withdrawn.
