Campus construction continues over summer - Rice University

Construction broke ground on the new building for Sid Richardson College at the end of the summer. According to Anzilla Gilmore, project manager for New Sid, construction should begin soon, if other construction projects remain on schedule.

“The project is expected to start on September 16, but it’s contingent on the completion of the new Will Rice Magister House project,” Gilmore said.

According to Gilmore, issues with hot water and air conditioning in the existing Sid building were partially related to the construction on New Sid.

“We installed new chilled water and steam lines to serve new and old Sid Rich,” Gilmore said. “Old Sid was connected to the new lines because the old lines that served old Sid Rich needed to be replaced. Whether we were building the new Sid Rich or not, the lines that serve old Sid Rich would have needed to be replaced.”

According to Sid’s website, the New Sid building will have 12 levels, with the commons, magister’s house, admin space and multifunctional rooms on the first and second floors, and residential spaces on the 10 floors above. Unlike the current Sid building, New Sid will include singles and doubles.

Gilmore said that the building should be completed by November 2020.

Will Rice Magister House

Once the new Will Rice Magister House is completed, the previous Magister House will be demolished to make space for the new Sid Richardson College building.

Kraft Hall

The new Social Sciences building Kraft Hall broke ground last fall in September 2018. The building is located between Tudor Fieldhouse and Hanszen College on the former Recreation Field 6.

Larry Vossler, the construction manager for Kraft Hall, said that after completion the building will be used for both office and classroom space.

“Kraft Hall includes space for [five] classrooms on the first floor,” Vossler said. “The first floor will also include a multipurpose space for events. The upper floors will be primarily office space and conference rooms for the School of Social Sciences Dean’s Suite, sociology department, economics department, Kinder Institute, HERC, Boniuk Institute and Texas Policy Lab.”

According to Housing and Dining’s website, construction on Kraft Hall is expected to be completed by December 2019.

Music and Performing Arts Center

Construction on the Music and Performing Arts Center began in September 2017. Once completed, the Arts Center will be a three-story opera theater located between West Lot and Alice Pratt Brown Hall. The building will include a 600-seat auditorium and a 70-seat orchestra pit, along with backstage spaces like dressing and conductor’s rooms, a musician’s lounge and a green room.

To make space for the construction of the Arts Center, Laboratory Road was closed and the front row of parking in West Lot 4 was removed.

According to H&D’s website, the Arts Center is expected to be open by July 2020.

In the bayou? Yes possibly. But they have no habitat along the banks because of how developed it will be.

If that was an issue it would have come up decades ago when there were parks and plazas bulit along the bayou downtown, IMO.

In their natural state, the bayous around Houston were full of gators. The bayou near where I lived in the 60s as a kid still had gators. Armand Bayou still has gators. Seems like some have been spotted in Buffalo Bayou between downtown and distant Memorial, but I don't recall when that was. The Memorial area bayous are still pretty much natural.

240-acre former landfill to be converted into one of the largest urban solar farm in Texas

Last week, Houston, TX Mayor Sylvester Turner announced that Sunnyside Energy, led by developer Dori Wolfe of Wolfe Energy LLC, has won a competition to be considered to repurpose a 240-acre former landfill in Sunnyside. Subject to meeting certain terms and conditions, the team will construct one of the largest urban solar farms in Texas., if not the largest.

In 2017, Mayor Turner joined C40 Reinventing Cities – a global competition for innovative carbon-free and resilient urban projects. Together with 13 other cities across the globe, underutilized parcels of land were identified for redevelopment. Through this competition, the Sunnyside Energy team of engineers, architects, neighborhood groups, and artists have created a vision to transform the unmaintained closed landfill into a beacon of sustainability and resiliency.

The preliminary design calls for the development of a 70-MW ballasted solar array that would:

Generate enough electricity to supply about 12,000 homes
Prevent potential future environmental hazards posed by the landfill
Provide power discounts for low-income residents in the neighborhood
Train and employ local labor
Store and filter stormwater on the tract to help reduce flooding
Include educational attributes at the restored site

Sunnyside Energy is a partnership among EDF Renewables, MP2-Shell, and Wolfe Energy. Sunnyside Energy will supply electricity to the Houston-area power grid through MP2-Shell and CenterPoint, meaning the solar-generated power would be distributed across the metropolitan region.

“It is fitting that Sunnyside would be home to one of the largest urban solar farms in Texas,” Mayor Turner said. “The project proposes to not only revitalize an underutilized piece of property that has been an eyesore to the community for years, but could also make Sunnyside a more complete, sustainable and resilient community.”

Next steps will be for the City of Houston and Wolfe Energy LLC. to complete the financial and environmental feasibility, finalize the design plan with community input and negotiate contract lease terms for use of the land. The project is estimated to begin in 2021.

University of Houston unveils first look at new College of Medicine
