Expansion on a Grand scale
Lakeview proceeds with three major hotel projects

Levit said Lakeview is building two new downtown hotels because it anticipates a growing demand for rooms once the WCC expansion is finished and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights opens, possibly in 2014.

"We think the human rights museum will be a feeder for the hotels."

I found some old designs of the Human Rights Museum (Part of the Design Competition). There were 8 finalists. Here were the runners-up

Design 1

Design 2

Design 3

Design 4

Design 5

Design 6

Design 7

Actually these were the designs of the 8 Semi-Finalists. There actually were 3 finalists. I'm not sure which design were the 3 finalists.

Good find Trebor - I believe those last 2 (and the chosen design) were the 3 finalists...

the saucier and perrotte one (#7) should have won...it would have been spectacular.....and given their track record, more likely on budget....by far and away my favourite.....especially now that i see the virtually opaque glass on the winner.

I also really liked the schmidt hammer lassen one (#6)

I think the thing that really sold the winner was the whole "you come into the darkness then ascend to the light via tower of hope"

though those other finalists are really interesting too...thanks a ton for the post + link trebor

#5 seems pretty funky with the light show going up into the sky, and #7 looks really "out there" futuristic.

In hindsight it's too bad we didn't choose one that we could afford to build!

^not just that...its too bad they didnt choose one that could be built in our climate....the ethereal qualities of the renderings has so far, not translated into reality. The skin appears opaque and not lace-like as the competition drawings showed.

unscientific media polls don't measure general public opinion. they are lightning rods for people with extreme views.

I'm with you on that one. It would have been a better choice for the site and location.

This is true, but we have only seen the museum during the daylight. From my office window, yes, the glass skin looks opaque reflecting the sky. But I wonder if it will look more lace-like and transparent once it's lit from within.
