the ‘national library of sejong city’ by S.A.M.O.O. architects & engineers is the first branch facility of the national library of korea, built in the country’s multifunctional administrative municipality. the architecture’s swooping roof references the motif of a book page turned over, which speaks of the building’s functions–a place where analogue and digital formats of information converge, offering users maximum convenience of sourcing volumes of data.

the first photographs of zaha hadid’s new ‘library and learning center’ at the vienna university of economics and business have been submitted to us by austrian material specialist rieder smart elements, whose façade panels feature on the 28,000-square-metre building. the centre is one of seven buildings that make up the new campus and is set to accommodate 24,000 students and 1800 staff.
Shifting Floor Plates Allow Program Differentiation In New Mixed-Use Development In Guangzhou, China

International architectural practice Aedas has designed mixed-use development and a new hotel in China. The complex is located outside of Guangzhou at an island within the Pearl River, and the project comprises of four distinct uses split between two different sites. The first site features a large retail exhibition area in the podium and a large office showroom building on top. The other site, 1401, contains a traditional multi-floor exhibition center in the podium with a 500-key 5-star hotel.
philologische bibliothek by norman foster leaves its mark in berlin
german architectural photographer felix loechner has recently completed a photo report on norman foster’s ‘philologische bibliothek’, the latest project of the freie universitat in berlin. the elliptical shape of the exterior form is enhanced by an elegantly gridded steel canopy checkered with panels of varying transparencies that illuminate the interior with a bright evenly diffused glow of natural light. within the large open space stark white ribbons outline a the various floors containing books and seating areas. independent from the exterior envelope, the contoured levels respond to the fluid expression of the roof while possessing an aesthetic nature of their own that transitions from areas of circulation to pockets of open space meant for sitting.

A little more than ten years ago, Cornell University launched a Computing and Information Sciences (CIS) program. Its purpose is to meld technical and social intellectual approaches in a single department dedicated to developing innovative solutions to complicated problems. Administratively, CIS brought together three disparate but complementary disciplines: computer science, information science, and statistics. Physically, however, these fields continued to operate from separate facilities both spread throughout the Cornell Campus, as well as in rented office space in downtown Ithaca, New York. In order to create a truly cohesive culture for this otherwise balkanized program Cornell needed a new building designed for its particular needs.

We redefined roof, one of the main architectural vocabulary, as an assembly of small slopes. The museum is firmly rooted in the local community and is open to the environment in many respects. We also applied a variety of materials into the roof and the wall, as part of our attempt to “community-forming.” This village-like museum with “scattering roof” is harmonized with its surrounding traditional hamlet. For structure, number of triangles with rigidity are piled up, which worked well to gain transparency and openness to the building.
global stadium-design connoisseurs populous have just completed their newest structure, the leeds arena, in england. the fan-shaped bowl is an innovation to indoor arenas around the world, focusing on keeping the closest proximity to the performance stage even from the farthest seat which lies only 67 meters away. the modestly sized 123,000-seat super-theater sits at the heart of the downtown area in the cultural district, integrating within and complimenting the existing infrastructure.

Canadian architecture firm ARK has won recognition at the Design & Health International Academy Awards in Brisbane, Australia. High commendation was given to the UJA Federation Community Complex for International Salutogenic Design. ARK`s work at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Village Family Health Team also received the award for International Interior Design, was highly commended for Mental Health Design, and recognized in the ‘Use of Art in the Patient Environment’ category.
The Opera Quarter is a central district in Oslo. The area is situated between the tracks of Oslo Central Station and Dronning Eufemias gate; a new avenue that will tie east and west together. Consisting of 12 buildings, the Opera Quarter will house 10 000 seats for work personnel, and 500 apartment units. All buildings are designed in accordance to the Barcode principal: long slender, high rise volumes with sightlines in between.
