if lake meadows is fully built it would become a skyline of its own! plus we can get rid of those ugly housing project looking apartment buildings

There's a big difference between Lake Meadows and South Works - 9 miles' worth.

Lakeshore East, Central Station, and Dearborn Park are examples of successful mega developments. With a new Metra stop at 31st, this site would have direct rail access into downtown (not frequent, though). The King Drive bus is a decent option too. Of course, driving to your job is always an option...

If Lend Lease pulls off the Lake Meadows project, then a million hats off to them. That would be nothing short of transformative for the city. Earth shattering, paradigm-changing transformation. That would be the beginning of the true rebirth of the south side, if that happened.

^That's Michael Reese Hospital and Prairie Shores. Part of Lake Meadows can be seen in the background.

Certainly the urban planning doesn't conform to contemporary standards, but the architecture itself is pretty slick. With a little updating, it could easily pass for something built today.

No doubt. 7,845 units on 70 acres at downtown occupancy numbers (1.5 people per unit, 95% occupied) would put a residential density number there of over 100,000 people per square mile. That would be an awesome boost for the South Side, especially if it were paired with additional redevelopment within a mile of it. And stretching the skyline south like that would be fun to see, too.

Yeah we learned our lesson. That lesson is Lakeshore East.

Great updates JC. That building off of Lake is an odd one. The site immediately west of it is completely leveled. I wonder when foundation work is planned to start?

Have you been inside of any old building? They are all usually trash until someone comes and updates them. That's an incredibly stupid reason to tear down a perfectly good building.

Prairie Shores is worth preserving, Lake Meadows not so much. Though it would be nice if they could work around some of the larger buildings rather than go through the wasteful steps of knocking down highrises and replacing them with similarly sized highrises.

I'm drawing a blank. What's planned there?
