Measuring the built up area along a highway is a pretty interesting way to measure the size of a city/built up area. It's going to be an apples to oranges measurement between cities, but its a good way of measuring the size based on how it feels on the ground. I just did it for Cleveland/Akron/Canton, since all three sprawl into eachother. It's (thankfully) not as big as I expected. East-West along Rt2 (concurrent with I90 for a ways) from where it starts in Perry until the N Lake St exit in Amherst is about 68miles. North to South down I271/Rt8/I77 until south of Canton is also about 68 miles. If you just stick to I77 though, its about 63miles from downtown Cleveland, but there are some really low density sprawl areas north of Akron that I don't think I would count.

Definitely harder to measure in NE/Midwest metros than Miami/LA with all the low density rural sprawl.

Nah, it's NY Metro. Shirley, NY to Mount Olive Twp., NJ is about 120 miles. Both are part of the NYC MSA.

A surprising contender in the 100-mile along a highway club: Seattle/Tacoma along I-5.

The Nisqually and Snohomish river deltas both give undeveloped gaps of one or two miles, but aside from those marshlands, Olympia/Tacoma/Seattle/Everett give a continuous chain from exit 99 south of Tumwater (outside Olympia) to mile 207 north of Arlington (outside Everett).

108 miles of near-constant development, while on I-90 by mile 35 you've left civilization behind.

Oh shiitakes, brah!

I hope you're right...there better not be a single break in urban development on that route!
