That's really beautiful - makes me happy to see developments like that in other parts of the Midwest. Kudos STL!

After lawsuits, bidding issues and much political wrangling, The Loop Trolley, has finally broken ground.

The Loop Trolley is a planned $43-million, 2.2-mile fixed-route electric trolley linking University City and Forest Park in St. Louis, with a stop at the Missouri History Museum.

Read about it HERE.

Below, The Loop Trolley route is marked in RED.

Great news! Milwaukee, St Louis, Cincinnati, so nice to see streetcars come back in older Midwestern cities. My only complaint is the use of vintage looking streetcars. I much prefer more forward-looking, sleek and modern ones.

I don't necessarily care for the vintage trolleys either, but St. Louis can be a region that appreciates - sometimes too much - nostalgia.

Joe Edwards, the de facto mayor of The Loop business district, is largely responsible for pushing the vintage trolley. This project is his baby.

I would have preferred sleeker cars.

Below is one of the trolley cars St. Louis is refurbishing, which was decommissioned by Portland, Oregon.

The Loop Trolley in St. Louis should be operational by mid-to-late 2016.

Another residential project is planned for the Central Corridor.

No word on the name just yet, but it is a 4-story residential infill on a fairly quiet stretch of Olive Street in the Central West End.

Plans are for 33-apartment units on top of an old ornate industrial building, which would be used for parking.

This street has some really nice old architecture, but could use some infill residential projects that could help spawn more development as well as the rebirth of other buildings along the street.

^you just answered your own question. Like many streetcar projects it's not only being built to get from point A to point B,it's also designed to be an economic development tool.

Its a silly project in my opinion , there are better uses for that money and better transit projects to fund. I'm starting to become tired with all these short streetcar plans , at least build a system. A beefed up bus service would be of better use here and half the cost. Transit doesn't always generate TOD or reinvestment.

You need to read what I wrote. Also, visit the website.

Joe Edwards, the de facto mayor of the Delmar Loop, pushed for the Loop Trolley.

In fact, he owns a large percentage of the attractions and real estate on the street (Moonrise Hotel, Pin-Up Bowl, The Pageant concert venue, several restaurants, St. Louis Walk of Fame, the Tivoli movie theater etc.).

This man single-handily revived the U-City/Delmar Loop, which now stretches into St. Louis City.

It was his dream to have the Loop Trolley (a streetcar) return to the Delmar Loop, which hadn't seen a streetcar since 1966.

This trolley line WILL NOT be run or financed by the local/bi-state transit authority.

It will operate independently pretty much like the local Madison County Transit Authority on the Illinois-side of the region or SCAT in St. Charles County.

With that said, The Loop is one of metro St. Louis' busiest nodes for pedestrian activity and entertainment.

Tons of empty lots? That's an exaggeration.

Nonetheless, since the Loop Trolley's announcement, development has stretched east into St. Louis City and a number of lots in St. Louis City's portion of The Loop have been redeveloped.

Washington University's Loop Lofts were partially built in the City of St. Louis. Old buildings have been revitalized/renovated and other developments are planned such as The Loop Media Hub.

As the tracks are laid, 1-gig fiber will be laid under the tracks creating The First Gigabit Main Street.

In essence, the trolley project is for tourists, visitors to The Loop and it is being constructed as a tool for economic development.

I just personally wish the cars were sleeker and modern.

Here's progress on City Walk on Euclid.

It's a $75 million Central West End apartment building with a 38,500-square-foot Whole Foods on the first floor.

It will be a 7-story building with 177 units.

Here's another update on another CWE/Central Corridor project.

Located at the corner of Lindell and Euclid in the heart of the Central West End, this luxury apartment development will have 12 stories and 217 units with a variety of floor plans.

Two floors of penthouses will top the building that will also include alcove, one- and two-bedroom apartments.

On the ground floor, 10,000 square feet of retail space and parking for shoppers.

Looking west, St. Louis's Central Corridor is crane city. Some cranes aren't in the photo.

To the left is City Walk on Euclid. In the background are cranes at the Washington University Medical Center (various projects).

Progress on St. Louis College of Pharmacy's classroom, library and research facility.

The new academic and research building and library is being built on the east side of campus along Taylor Avenue. There will be 213,000 square feet of floor space, which will include a large auditorium, several large classrooms, smaller classrooms, study areas, and 30,000 square feet of research space. The library will more than triple in size, and there will also be a welcome center for prospective students and their families.

St. Louis College of Pharmacy is one of St. Louis' oldest colleges.

WU-BJC Medical Center TOD Office Building

Construction could begin by the end of 2015. The building's cost and exact size are not yet determined, but it will provide about 40,000 square feet of space per floor on as many as 14 floors.

Developer Clayco and the Washington University School of Medicine have collaborated on several past projects, including the Scott McKinley Research Building.

The building will be located next to the Central West End MetroLink station and will accommodate medical offices.

Another article on Residences at 4534 Olive

Apartment building planned in the Central West End
March 20, 2015 12:15 am • By Tim Bryant
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Every resident will get a balcony or a deck at a four-story apartment building to be constructed on piers over an 89-year-old Central West End warehouse.

Planned are 22 one-bedroom and 11 two-bedroom apartments in the new building at 4534 Olive Street and an adjoining structure built in 1900. The warehouse will provide garage parking for residents.

The developers hope to begin construction May 1 and complete the project next spring. The $6.5 million project is the work of Rothschild Development and Blackline Design + Construction, with architecture by Arcturis.

Michael Schwartz, development director at Rothschild and an owner of Blackline, said the apartment project is an effort to pull Central West End redevelopment northward.

“The Central West End is a prime neighborhood, and we feel it’s an appropriate time to be pushing the borders,” he said.

Preliminarily called the Residences at 4534 Olive, the project already has won neighborhood support. Jim Dwyer, head of the Central West End Association’s planning committee, said the panel is enthusiastic about the project.

That stretch of Olive already has Bowood Farms nursery, Cafe Osage, new residences and the rehabbed Lister Building, said Dwyer, a developer who has lived in the neighborhood since 1967.

Many empty structures remain and redoing 4534 Olive will put another neglected building back in circulation, he added.

“Thirty-three new apartments in a block that is very quiet right now is a terrific boon to the northern edge of the Central West End,” Dwyer said.

Arcturis’ design is dramatic. The existing one-story brick warehouse, which opened in 1926 as an auto repair garage, will provide residents’ parking with the entry on the alley at the rear of the building.
