I don't know what that sentence means.

There will never be a time when "Gran Torino" exits my list of favorite movies.

Classic Eastwood at the top of his game.

Is South Detroit supposed to be Windsor? Or Downriver?

Also, there probably hasn't been a "midnight (passenger) train" running through Detroit since the 60's.

And yeah, Robocop looks/feels nothing like Detroit. The beginning of Beverly Hills Cop, Gran Torino, Four Brothers (even though filmed elsewhere), Don't Breathe, 8 Mile, are more evocative. Also a lot of gritty 1970's-era films, including some good blaxploitation films. Detroit 9000, in particular, has tons of 1970's downtown Detroit scenes.

They used "south" because of the way it sounded in the song.

I know... Who wouldn't want to spend their free time in Windsor, ON?

It's rather like that one song about how daddy was a cop on the east side of Chicago. You know what's in east Chicago? A really, really big lake. Daddy would have needed scuba gear to walk the beat as a cop on the east side of Chicago.

Huh, and here I thought South Detroit was actually Toledo...

Flagstaff has nothing, unless you're familiar with the MST3K episode "Werewolf."

Cincinnati has WKRP in Cincinnati, a couple of bands, a deadly Who concert and, for some people, Rain Man.

Ventura, CA doesn't have much, but this guy has done much here...

Santa Barbara though has a few surprises that nobody would think of coming from there...

don't forget about this awesomely bad piece of early '90s cinema!

sorce:wikipedia

overall, it's terrible and painfully formulaic, but it is redeemed to an extent by the awesome scenes of the kids rollerblade racing down cincinnati's famous hills.

chicago, doesn't have an east "side" per se, like the other 3 cardinal directions, but it does have a community area named "east side" on the far SE side of the city, smooshed between the calumet river and the indiana border.

it was once a solidly white, blue collar neighborhood full of steel workers and their families, but today is now overwhelmingly latino.

there's also a suburb named "east chicago" just over the border in indiana. it's home to the giant indiana harbor steel mill.

Dirty little secret: That hill in the final scenes of that movie doesn't really exist

There's Route 66, the road and the song:
"You'll see Amarillo
Gallup, New Mexico
Flagstaff, Arizona
Don't forget Winona..."

There is a North Chicago, West Chicago and East Chicago (East Chicago is the closest). There is also a South Chicago, but it's a neighborhood within the city.

Are there any other cities with all directions covered? I can't think of any.

Going back to the intent of the thread, for Chicago (if that's what we're on), I think of Da Bears superfans from SNL.

For Wilmington, the most recent pop cultural reference is Fight Club.

Nowadays, Southsiders call a chunk of the South Side that has streets with "East" designations as the East Side. Where it starts, I don't know, but the Dan Ryan expressway makes a good dividing line, because it runs parallel to State Street, which is the marker for EW. Southsiders also don't consider Hyde Park the South Side, so there's all sorts of loose definitions.

The only other thing I can think of associating with Wilmington (without checking Google) is Joe Biden. I guess he could qualify as current pop culture. He's certainly in the news a lot.

Another one for Kalamazoo that many may not know - it is the original home of Checker Motors Corp. - manufacturer of the famous yellow Checker Taxi Cabs. Certainly, this brand is more synonymous with NYC, even after they ceased operating in 1999, but from the 1920's through early 1980's, "the car that made Kalamazoo famous" rolled off the production lines right here in my hometown.

Sorry, I meant "North Chicago" "West Chicago" and "East Chicago" are all independent municipalities: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Chicago,_Illinois, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Chicago,_Illinois and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Chicago,_Indiana. South Chicago is an official communty area (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Chicago,_Chicago), though of course, colloquially these terms mean something else.

Toronto's biggest pop culture contribution seems to be comedy.

SCTV (John Candy, Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara etc.)
Saturday Night Live (Lorne Michaels is from Toronto, Mike Myers, Robin Duke (lots of Toronto Second City members went on to Saturday Night Live)
The Kids In The Hall
Ivan Reitman
Jim Carrey
Howie Mandel
Kenny & Spenny
Will Arnet
Samantha Bee
Lily Singh

From Allentown originally.

Well, we have the Billy Joel song which isn't exactly flattering. Then there is...umm, the old Bethlehem Steel mill next door has been in a few films?
