Smile NEW YORK | 140 West 24th Street | 416 FT | 45 FLOORS

Permits Filed For 45-Story Hotel At 140 West 24th Street, Chelsea

Quote:
Chelsea’s hotel boom has been gobbling up whatever under-built properties remain in the neighborhood, and now that is happening at 140 West 24th Street, between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, where new building applications were filed yesterday. Sam Chang is developing a new 45-story and 416-foot-tall tower on the property, which is naturally going to be designed by neighborhood go-to, Gene Kaufman.

The total construction area will measure 172,640 square feet, and within that, 142,949 square feet will be designated commercial space. That will be comprised of various amenities including a dining area and kitchens on the cellar and first floors, and 508 hotel rooms up above. At an average size of about 270 square feet, those are on the smaller side.

Design specifics have not yet been released, but with Kaufman at the helm, something unconventionally conventional is all but assured. Demolition permits for the existing three-story structure were approved in January, and with Sam Chang at the helm, the project will probably go vertical sooner than later.

Its like they took the model of a "NYC-like" city building model from a 1996 video game and proposed to build it.

Where is the self-respect when these atrocities are allowed to be built to stand? Those in power to review proposals need stricter rules for design. Good grief.

All of these budget hotel streets are great sites for nice, clever and beautiful infill buildings... it's squandered opportunity after squandered opportunity. Something has to be done about this.

Meh....IMO It could look decent if the right color and facade materials are used. The tank coverings---I assume that's what those two things are--are okay.

The scourge of these horrible setbacks has got to be remedied.

Like all these setback towers, common sense. basic design understanding and plain good taste tells you the bizarre short sections that actually meet the streetwall should be 3-4 times as tall to look sensible and appealing, yet this cities' ridiculous DOB sky/plane rules prevent that. REFORM THE CODE NOW DAMMIT! *

There need to be some aesthetic guidelines. This is unacceptable. My friends suburb wouldn't let people use certain color bricks on their 2000 SQFT houses. A giant skyscraper that could stand for hundreds of years needs to be held to higher standards.

Gene Kaufman’s 45-Story 140 West 24th Street Climbs Towards Halfway Mark, In Chelsea

Quote:
The reinforced concrete structure of 140 West 24th Street is nearing the halfway mark in its rise to an imminent 45-story and 416-foot pinnacle. Gene Kaufman Architect is designing the new hotel, and Sam Chang is developing the 142,949 square foot structure. Besides the 508 hotel rooms, there will be a main lobby, a dining area, and kitchens on the cellar and first floors. The site is located in Chelsea, between Sixth and Seventh Avenue.

Recent photos from the vicinity show the tower making its way into the neighborhood skyline, and rising over the surrounding buildings.

Sam Chang = Public Enemy No. 1 for New York City

Gene Kaufman = Public Enemy No. 2 for New York City

Know those names and revile them. May they live in infamy - and for the love of God, stop building anything ASAP.
