What? We are talking about a gigantic combined market of 9123 people!

I remember, as a kid, there was a serious proposal to move the NHL St. Louis Blues to Saskatoon. And this was back when Saskatoon was half the size it is today.

I entirely support this. There would be a drop in play for these three clubs, but a proper national league system with promotion/relegation is critical.

For the game to thrive in Canada, I firmly believe this must happen.
  • CPL: 10-14 team professional Tier 1 league. Includes TFC, Impact, Whitecaps, Fury, Edmonton along with Hamilton, Winnipeg, Halifax and any other new teams created with the inception of the CPL to begin.
  • Canadian Soccer Association: 10-team Tier 2 league. Should be pro.
  • League 3 12-16 teams. Possibly amateur.

This type of setup is what gets us things like larger youth involvement or increased CONCACAF Champions League Berths.

Kind of surprised London isn't being mentioned as a possible market for this league. Seems like the right sized city where we sell out over 9,000 for every London Knights game and have the highest attendance in the NBL. We have a pretty strong history supporting soccer as well and Western's stadium is certainly big enough.

It's been rumoured along with KW and Mississauga.

It's not feasible in the near future for them to even consider leaving MLS. Quality of play, franchise valuations, branding, marketing...literally everything is better for them in MLS right now.

Give it a couple decades and if the CPL is on a strong footing maybe there's a possibility. Maybe.

CPL officials have been floating with the idea of creating a CPL2 once they reach ~16 teams with some pro/rel interaction between the two. The league needs to be created in a way where pyramid financing makes sense for teams in either league and isn't a death-knell for going down or impossible to compete when going up.

YYC Stadium

Got to be YYC's stadium, right on the LRT, 2 stops from downtown and places to eat and have a pint beforehand.

They could put stands on the grass infront of the z-shaped walkway north side of field and full length on the west side where there already is one section. Then put a second tier on the ACAD roof. It'd be the best smaller stadium in Canada with locker rooms, medical, all that stuff already existing. License to host all sorts of big smaller events at community level and special events. They might have issues having alcohol sales allowed in the stands though.

The Canadian Premier League will be hosting a “Sask. Primer” public information session on July 21.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. at O’Hanlon’s Irish Pub in Regina on the eve of Soccer Day in Saskatchewan which will feature Spain’s Valencia meeting the NASL’s New York Cosmos at New Mosaic Stadium.

The information session will feature CPL project manager Paul Beirne along with Joe Belan and Lee Genier from the prospective Saskatchewan team’s ownership group.

Genier has publicly spoken about his interest in helping bring the CPL to the province.

In May, Genier told the Saskatoon StarPhoenix that the ownership group was looking to put a team in either Regina or Saskatoon and were looking at building an expandable 7,000 to 8,000-seat stadium.

I'm so glad these teams are building dedicated soccer stadiums instead of just squeezing into existing gridiron venues. This is unprecedented, professional, and very legit from a chance of success perspective.

And they have an exhibition game between a La Liga team and the NY Cosmos?? Who would have thunk it, I hope they fill up all the seats at their beautiful new stadium for this!

Unless they find a sucker willing to open up his own wallet, it won't fly in Regina or Saskatoon. Neither city will spend money on a soccer stadium when existing options are available.

According to this news segment from CTV News Atlantic, Soccer NB is still agitating for a franchise for the CPL based in Moncton and playing at the 10,000 seat Moncton Stadium.

http://atlantic.ctvnews.ca/video?cli...ylistPageNum=1

Jonathan McInnes (the reporter) also states that the CPL intends to hold an information session for potential investors in Moncton later this summer.

So, the local promoters at least have the ear of the CPL. It will be an uphill battle though. Moncton is lucky enough to have an appropriate venue which has proven itself already with a couple of FIFA sanctioned events, including the Womens World Cup. The main issue will be finding investors for the venture. The two richest men in town are already franchise owners (Wildcats - QMJHL & Magic - NBL). They are rich enough to also consider investing in the CPL too, the question is whether or not they would want to.........

Absolutely the right thing to do. Much better than having teams play in front of 5 - 7000 fans in a lower bowl of the CFL stadium which is over half empty and sucks the atmosphere right out of the game.

Saskatoon's university football stadium would be a good compromise. Ideal size for the Premier League team.

Gordie Howe Bowl is being renovated/expanded to around 5000 capacity for football. Would be adequate for soccer.

The Halifax popup is completely privately financed and is leasing land from the city for use whilst giving the city control over non-CPL scheduling. I don't see why Saskatoon/Regina couldn't play host to a similar agreement.

Perhaps it's something pertaining to not wanting to rely on NMS/UoS groups dictating rental or usage agreements with currently existing stadiums? We'll have to wait for the 21st to get a better idea.

The owners seem to think the modular stadium would cost $15-20M and could be built in nine months.

Might fly in Halifax, time will tell. I just think spending on stadiums in cities that have viable options is a waste of money for a league that hasn't even started yet. Start the league, keep costs as low as possible, build the brand. Then start worrying about soccer specific stadiums.

I can find stadiums in Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg in the west right now that would work for soccer.

The owners in Halifax and Saskatchewan seem pretty confident that the money invested in popups will be well worth it. The CPL has to walk a fine-line early on where they can't spend like mad but they also want to appear to be a fully-fledged professional league, too. Canada has had enough amateur leagues in the past that they really need to step away from that and make a good impression.

Filling a quarter of the seats in CFL stadiums is not how you set a good first impression. Packing smaller venues and creating that atmosphere gives a good first impression. Owning your own facilities creates a good impression and gives fans a home that they can call their own.

They may theoretically work for soccer but that doesn't mean they're ideal for building a brand and a league. Piggybacking off the CFL is probably something the CPL is trying to avoid, at least in totality. Some stadium shares like in Hamilton (and potentially Ottawa) are bound to occur.
