Antwerp - november 11th 2006

Last year I was in Antwerp for a visit of the Boerentoren.
Here is a series of pictures of the city.
Enjoy!

1. The railway station.

2.

3. Surroundings of the railway station.

4.

5. The Century Building. Pure Art Deco.

6. Idem.

7. The railway station.

8. The entrance of the Meir, probably the most famous street of Antwerp.

9. The Antwerp Tower (left).

10.

11. Historical buildings along the Meir.

12. Antwerp Tower.

13.

14.

15. Contrast with Antwerp Tower.

16.

17.

18. Some street scenes.

19.

22. Police Tower.

thanks for the photos. I like the train station exterior, I don't think I had been able to find any photos of it when I looked for belgian stations before. It looks like Antwerp also has some great early 20th century buildings. The Century Building is jsut great. (perfect? )

A big thank you, Erwin! As always, very fine photos nicely identified.

Indeed it looks like Antwerp still has quite a few gorgeous old buildings.

@AJ: I find the interior of the railway station even more lush and ornate than its exterior.

1. Hmm... that doesn't look anything like the train station I went through at Antwerp. What happened to the new concrete modernist station?

The Antwerp station underwent an enormous face lift.
Above the old building got recently completely restored and 3 additional floors were added underground in a very modernist design.
Behind the nearby zoo an complete new access was built and is close to being finished.
Today in the front of the station on the Astrid Square 2 previous disappeared concrete lions are going to be put where they originally belonged on the top of the building.
Allow me to say that this building is one of the finest railway cathedrals on the old continent.
