Madison and Chicago

I was only in each city for a half a day, so these aren't all encompassing tours, just what I got.

I don't think I've seen a Madison photo thread on this site before. Looks like a charming place.

Madison is without a doubt the best city in the Midwest with a metro of under a million. Because it is on a a narrow isthmus it was impossible to build freeways into its urban core. I think that allowed it to keep its prewar city feel that most other American cities lost.

Fantastic set. Would love to visit Madison one day.

Also, Chicago is just such an incredible and underrated city.

Fantastic scale and diversity.

Good to see the cute little downtown core of Madison.

Residential houses right next to office buildings in downtown ... living right next to working.

The area of Madison between the capitol and the UW is one of the densest in the Midwest outside of Chicago.

yeah, madison's isthmus squeeze-play creates one of the densest little pockets anywhere in the region.

madison doesn't act "big city" over a vast area or anything, but for where it does, it does so convincingly.

core madison has ~21,000 people living in 3 census tracts all 3 of which are over 45,000 ppsm.

in total, those three core tracts have 20,846 people on 0.337 sq. miles of land, for an overall average density of nearly 62,000 ppsm, which is crazy dense for the midwest.
