VANCOUVER | My Neighbourhood - Cambie Village & Environs
It's been a long time since I've had a photo thread but I had a free afternoon last Saturday and finally managed to get out with my camera.
Back in March I moved from downtown to a new apartment just across False Creek in the Cambie Village area. It's a great neighbourhood with a nice mix of green, relaxed residential streets and convenient urban amenities.
The main retail strip along Cambie Street that anchors the neighbourhood has a sort of small town "Main Street" vibe. It's attractive and pleasant but otherwise lacks the urban funkiness of more trendy, youthful areas like Vancouver's actual Main Street nearby. But Main is a short walk away as is the increasingly more bustling and urban Broadway for those looking for a bit more excitement. With the addition of the Canada Line down Cambie 3 years ago, downtown is just a quick hop away as well.
Anywho, onto the photos...
My trek starts off on 16th Ave where there is a small eclectic commercial/retail pocket hidden amongst the residential streets...
Turning into one of the residential side streets I came across this random but awesome installation...
From 16th Ave north (towards downtown) it's mostly apartment buildings, while south it quickly turns into predominantly detached housing...
There's a noticeably large number of young families and pregnant women in the neighbourhood...
There are a couple nice parks in the area...
And Douglas Park...
It's hard not to be constantly reminded that we live in a rainforest...
7th and Ash was an old stomping ground.... so I had the pleasure of exploring this area quite a bit. Thanks for the memories.

I like Vancouver and your neighbourhood. I like those houses and parks. I can understand why there´re so many pregnant women and young couples living in such pretty neighbourhood. It has quality of life.
Those snow mountains in the background are really nice. I like the views. Vancouver must be wonderful.
Thanks for the comments! I quite like the mix in the area. It is a nice balance of healthy urbanity and lush, low-key residential. Though when I think about it, much of Vancouver outside of downtown is like this. Areas like Commercial Drive, Kits, Kerrisdale, Main Street, and many others have a similar configuration... rows of quiet, green residential side streets anchored by busy retail strips, all tied together by fairly convenient and frequent transit. I just especially like the Cambie Village area for its centrality and the especially convenient Canada Line.
Is Cambie Village affordable in any way, shape or form? My guess is no.
Not if you want to buy a house, but apartments around there are actually pretty cheap. I lived near Oak and 12th in 2009 and paid about $1000 a month for a large 2 bedroom apartment. Sadly, there was no La Taqueria or Canada Line back then.

To buy, no, but it's a great alternative to downtown in terms of renting. Given its proximity and easy access to downtown (Canada Line) and relative centrality within the city as a whole it is quite a good value area. I pay $250 less than my last place downtown despite my current place being nicer and comparably sized. If you don't mind a slightly more dated apartment there are some real good deals to be had in the area.
