- ANN ARBOR: I Love Her -

Most of my classmates and I have graduated and are still waiting for job interviews , so my friend and I went around and took some pictures of the city and University of Michigan. Hope you enjoy it!

An enormous blow to independent retail. Shaman Drum was rite of passage into the University. That small odd door lead up a set of stairs where you would navigate a complicated maze of rooms and corridors stacked to the ceiling with books. Each room had a sales associate to get your books. The lines were long every year, so it was unimaginable why they were struggling. I guess another death of a book store by amazon

President's House. There was four of these italianate homes constructed on campus shortly after its refounding in 1837. They were only meant to house faculty. The other 3 were demolished in the late 1800's as the U grew, but this one remains. The U was founded in Detroit in 1817, failed, left and refound in [then] Annarbour in 1837. Still, they were pretty broke which explains why the construction of this home is very simple

Need an idea of what the city looks like above? Check here for a good aerial. The University is center, and downtown is at the far left. The State/liberty area is where tall towers are.

Excellent stuff. Now, I want to see A2 take it to the next level.

BTW, what street is this? I'm having a hard time placing it:

Columbus, State College, East Lansing, Bloomington, West Lafayette, Champaign, Evaston, Madison, Iowa City, and Minneapolis are better...

I agree with hudkina, the "crap new apartment building" doesn't look bad to me.

Great photos of a lively city!

Ah, well the crap apartment building at least does add some density. I just think it's too flat, and the brick is fake on it, but hey at least it's a sign things are beefing up a bit in that area.

LMich, that's Liberty Street between 4th and Division.

To borrow a phrase from the pope: "Ann Arbor, huh? Never heard of it."

Just awesome.

Ann Arbor seems like such a beautiful place, untouched by the grit of Michigan. It seems like a nice place to just hang out. Also looks like a good place to do some shopping and check out some restaurants/bars. So many (well-kept) historical buildings.

Your photos were truly amazing. I can tell you really went for a few creative angles and they all turned out well. Nice work. I also loved the commentary on some photos.

EE.

I don't know why, but I tend to think of Ann Arbor's business district as only stretching out along State and Main and forget that it stretches along quite a few east-to-west routes, as well.

Nice pics. I don't like that apartment building either. It's pretty bland to me. The good thing about it is the buffalo wild wings on the first floor. And North Quad is coming along nicely. There's another apartment building under construction or recently finished on East U that I like better.

There is some grit in Ann Arbor, although it's pretty weak relatively speaking.

And there's some beautiful academic buildings that are in need of a revamp.

And Heyward, do you know what the plans are for Dennison? It's not in bad shape, but that area is kind of lacking. That and U Towers are pimples on the Ann Arbor skyline.

I've never much been an overly-big fan of Ann Arbor, but I say, after being away from the Midwest for over a year and seeing these pictures, I have a newfound appreciation of the region. Not that I didn't before, but there's somewhat of a new perspective for me. The north is truely blessed and underappreciated.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Novawolverine, I've heard they are just reducing the number of classrooms in Dennison. I always hated how rude people were at the elevators waiting to go up. The only class I ever got a C in was in Dennison as well. I sure hope the renovations cover up its many flaws.

Spent the last 2 months in Ann Arbor because my cousin just graduated from the college there. It's a great city and has a great atmosphere. I really like it and wouldn't mind living there cause it's relatively cheap. Problem is, jobs aren't too abundant. I tried applying for quite a few.

Great pictures. It's great Hayward has so much pride in A2-- and has the ability and enthusiuam to reveal it so effectively and affectionately in pictures. Ann Arbor has always been a special place, but it's looking better than ever.
