So, one of my favourite days of the year started out shitty...

But it cleared up enough for the Pride Week bonfire to go ahead. It's my favourite of the Pride Week events - even more than the parade, club nights, game nights, TED talks, and everything else. It's just wholesome, community fun - and one of the very, very few Pride-related things where there's a pretty even percentage of gay, lesbian, and trans locally.

A few pictures, set to the sounds of a couple of the boys singing around our fire...

One of us had a birthday.

As you're hopefully aware, the last scrap of France in North America is right next to us - St-Pierre et Miquelon. Can't recommend it enough - it's an amazing place to visit. It's like a few blocks of a larger city, as opposed to such a small town. Currency is Euros, everything closes for two hours at lunch, the people look 20 years younger than their peers on the mainland, etc.

Anyhow, despite all of our interaction with each other...

...this year was the first time anyone can recall that one of their drag queens came to St. John's for amateur night, a performance night for new or first-time drag queens/kings.

Then, Pride Week was over and the gayness subsided... but so did the sun.

And then, gentlemen, ladies... our suffering, from fucking January to July, was ended. Well and truly ended. Hot, humid, suffocating weather. I haven't slept in two days from the heat. And it is GLORIOUS.

I'm going to Streetview the fuck out of it and let you know. Link me here any threads you'd recommend!

EDIT: It's definitely as knotted and convoluted as we are. Not much of a grid, which I LOVE.

I used to post photo threads on here all the time... I haven't paid for my photobucket account in a couple of years, but I think the pics I have up on here will still show up, just with the big photobucket watermark on them. Click on my name, then "show all statistics", then all the threads I've started, and if you go back far enough you'll see plenty of my photo threads listed.

Nice pictures! Was the water warm enough for swimming, where you had the bonfires?

I thought you were going to tease us with SPM pictures.

Here's all of mine:

It's a fascinating place. I personally love it because it's great to see what culture a different people would build with EXACTLY the same building blocks as the Irish/English had in Newfoundland.

Great thread! I went on a long cruise last summer (massive photo thread here: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=235574) and St. John's was one of my favorite places. Very cool city!

I'd be interested to know what "hot, humid, suffocating weather" entails in the Maritimes. I lived through two Toronto summers decades ago which were iffy, but being from Houston it's hard to impress me with "hot and humid" unless it's REALLY hot and humid.

A few pics from Ayreonaut's visit to Newfoundland over the past couple weeks.

Video Link

Picked them up from the airport, then straight to Duck of Duckworth for... easily Top 5... fish'n'chips and fi'n'chi'n'd in the city.

Then out for a soft night, cocktails and beers with minimal dancing lol...

Brunch at Mallard Cottage in Quidi Vidi...

Followed by a tasting at the Quidi Vidi Brewery...

We also checked out Bannerman Brewery...

The Catholics let us in but the Anglicans wouldn't...

So we did some lounging in Bannerman Park...

And walked around the core...

Then they went across the island for a week in an RV - hitting up everything from Gros Morne to L'Anse aux Meadows. In the meantime, I had a few family gatherings with cousins...

And jeddy1989 and his man had their wedding shower...

When they got back, we went for a drive north of the city, from Middle Cove Beach to Pouch Cove.

We stuffed ourselves at Bad Bones Ramen...

We stuffed ourselves at Adelaide Oyster House...

And then suddenly it was their last night here, and they were off...

Not sure about the Maritimes (we're not part of that region, ) but here it doesn't take much. I've experienced a low-humidity 29C here, and that was fine. But when it's humid, 22-23 I start getting uncomfortable. So humidex values in the low 30s at day, or high 20s at night.

Spent a couple weeks in Europe, so first update in a bit. Went for a sunrise run this morning. Couldn't run the length of myself without taking a picture, though.

That South Beach building is something else! I bet it looks way out of place in the piles of snow in winter.

Nice pictures!

I actually thought you would've had peak foliage by now; I was thinking the end of September. We are actually not too far behind you down here in Delaware. But that's not because the leaves normally change this early in the year. It's because we haven't had rain since July and the trees are stressed out. Our trees typically peak around Halloween.

We're getting close to peak foliage now. Most trees are still partially green but a few are already bare. It should transition quickly now - they could be bare overnight if we get a windstorm.
