Additional funding has been earmarked for the joint Ottawa Public Library - Library and Archives Canada facility at LeBreton Flats to make it a net-zero facility.

The new funding will allow for:
  • upgrades to the building’s envelope and insulation;
  • triple-glazed windows;
  • solar panels on the rooftop and embedded in the facade;
  • additional sustainable materials; and
  • an indoor green wall.

The new central library is set to open in late 2024-2025.

It was an exceptional good idea and a rather ballsy one too because at the time there was no precedent for it anywhere in the country.

It really did kill 2 birds with one stone................the city got a new downtown library at a fraction of the cost of building a new one and saved a huge downtown shopping mall from becoming an empty shell and blight on the urban landscape.

It isn't eye catching but was an excellent urban planning decision and has been emulated in other cities as a way to renew their main downtown shopping malls into an entirely new function. For Canada it was a trail blazing decision and one that that has been emulated across the country and indeed North America.

When Wellington Square {which became the Eaton Centre/Galleria} opened in the early 1960s it was the first downtown mall in North America and 40 years later, London also showed how the the downtown mall can be transformed into a new centre that reflected our changing downtowns.

Final design of the new Joint Library and Archives and Ottawa Central Library building on LeBreton Flats. Design has been value engineered a bit, mostly the roof and top floor. Otherwise, more green features have been added and Covid proof enhancements (better ventilation, touchless doors and such).

A few more images from CTV, with January 2020 CBC images for comparison:

The more I look at it, the more I prefer the new design. Love the changes to the east side of the back, with the additional stone, the roof and the skylight.

The updated square alcoves over the grand entrance look far better than the arch ones from before, which had a 80s mall (Eatons) or airport (O'Hare) feel.

It's a bit bunkerish but at least the exterior seems clad in quality materials. The interior looks great. The exposed pillars look like they've been placed at random and are a complete afterthought .

The furnishings and colours make me feel like I'm back in 1977. The building itself looks expensive but bland, like for whatever money went into it they could have ended up with something much better.

The exposed pillars on the exterior indicate entrances. I didn't know that until the most recent presentation.

I felt the original design, with the exaggerated waves and airport/mall skylights looked outdated, but the refined and final design fixes a lot of it. The heavy use of wood, and colour on the inside still gives out 70s vibes, but it will depend on the final product.

I would have preferred an architectural competition to see what else was could be offered, but overall I'm happy with it. Execution wilk be key.

This is a once-in-a-generation type of project. It has everything going for it: a crazy budget, beautiful site, the will for quality, and grants for environmental features. The DSAI design is seriously a disappointment. I wonder if there was some design by committee going on here. DSAI usually produce restrained and elegant buildings, but this one seemed to have gotten away from them. It is clumsy, nonsensical, busy, a bit too on the nose, and full of clashing ideas. Sad face.

Some harsh criticism of Ottawa's proposed central branch. I could see how it can be polarizing. Hoping the final product might change some minds.

The Rosemount branch of the OPL, off Wellington West.

Original, from the Ottawa Citizen:

The City of Gatineau has received four submissions as part of a competition to redevelop the Aylmer sector's former City Hall and Central Library. Here are the entries:

Aylmer is the City's west end community and dates back nearly 200 years. It's centered around a fantastic main street lined with cultural destinations, shops and restaurants. It's set to be served by the future Gatineau Tramway within 10 years, which will mark roughly 80 years since they the original tramway service was discontinued.

Don't ever let them value engineer that library. You don't want Edmonton's library to happen.

Good god I hope not!.. Edmonton's new library is an absolute travesty. The preliminary design/sketch for this Saskatoon library looks very promising.
