It's a cliche, but Vancouverites are known for boasting how you can go skiing and sailing on the same day.

In the SE the skiing locale is usually Western North Carolina. Places like Sugar Mtn have 1200+ foot elevation slopes.

people people people. we're getting way off topic here.

this thread is supposed to be about the awesomeness that is Milwaukee.

I think.

Yeah, let's get back to me visiting Milwaukee in late April... I'm getting pizza at Barbiere's, doing some urban kayaking, will definitely ride a bike around at some point, and eat and drink a lot. Any must go-tos? Thoughts on Harley Davidson museum and art museum?

And what is Milwaukee's best beer?

Besides Milwaukee's Best, of course.

late april? miller park. check out a brewers game. just avoid it when the cubs are in town or it'll feel like Wrigley North.

I'm not a big baseball fan, but I went to a game a few years ago and was pleasantly surprised how nice miller park was. and this year's Brew Crew could be as good as any Milwaukee team since Harvey's Wallbangers back in the early 80s.

oh, and be sure to have a brat with stadium sauce. just don't ask what it is.

dammit, now I'm hungry...

Thanks. Brewers game and brats... good idea. Didn't even think of that.

And fuck the Cubs.

i've lived in both, to me there's more thats different than the same; dallas has one midwestern parent and one southern. the topography, the road infrastructure, (style and layout) the foliage, the housing style/materials, the density in the suburbs are all very different...

I figured that comment might cause trouble.

It's not that I have anything against the Cubs really, just more pissed at the Indians for blowing it to to them in the WS. It's really just misplaced anger.

Get involved in some tailgating if you can when you go to a Brewers game. I mentioned it earlier in this thread (way before it veered off into skiing) but Miller Park is the only major league park I've ever been to where tailgating works and the locals are friendly, even to (most) opposing teams' fans (I'm a Reds fan, so they probably just took pity on my father and I when we went there)

huh, i would have thought that Erie, PA was pirates territory?

or is it split?

as for milwaukee beer, they have a good craft brewing scene up there.

the bigger local names are Lakefront, Water Street, and Sprecher, but just explore, you can't go wrong.

The built vernacular there isn't incredibly urban. It looks like lots of cottage-style detached wood framed structures with a few larger homes mixed in. Many of them are split into two-units, and it looks like in some cases there might be houses in the alleys. But overall, I'm guessing the relatively high population densities come from a mixture of minimal urban blight (e.g., very few vacant lots or abandoned buildings) and a high number of people per household.

If other Midwestern cities besides Chicago and Milwaukee experienced substantial Hispanic migration, we'd probably see unusually dense neighborhoods of this sort in them as well.
St. Louis would have definitely benefit from a Latino migration. It would easily be the second densest city in the Midwest if it hadn't lost 2/3rds of it's population. Remarkably, I feel that St. Louis still feels the 2nd most structurally dense in the Midwest outside Chicago.

You just don't see blocks in the Midwest like this outside Chicago and Cincinnati, which are the other two old world Midwestern cities.

https://www.google.com/maps/@38.5672...7i13312!8i6656

Chicago is an interesting city, because it's definitely a Great Lake city through and through, but you can tell there was a lot of vernacular exchange between Chicago and St. Louis as well. There are architectural nuances that I see in St. Louis that I haven't seen in any other city besides Chicago.

It's about time...they hoisted some hideous crap onto the rest of us for decades. Though. I do have to thank the good people of Milwaukee for cheap beer during my high school years. O-M may be a notch above piss water but it was cheap.

Very much split. Erie's the oddball of PA for sports allegiances... and the oddball for plenty of other reasons as well.

There's probably not another metro area that's basically equidistant from 3 different major league sports cities. Buffalo (90 mi), Cleveland (100 mi), and Pittsburgh (120 mi) split the Erie area's loyalties... but there's also significant support for the Yankees and Giants, owing to proximity to western NY/Buffalo ... so it's weird and I guess just depends on who your dad's team is. I'd say the order is below:

Baseball: Indians, Pirates (sizable Yankees fanbase)
Football: Steelers, Browns, Bills (sizable Giants, Eagles fanbase) (in the Bills TV market, but definitely more Steelers and Browns fans)
Hockey: Penguins, Flyers, Sabres
Basketball: Cavs, 76ers (sizable Knicks, Celtics fanbase)

Thanks, I've heard of Sprecher before... but I'll be sure to try all of them.

That's why I'll never trust an Erieite... bandwagoneers and fraudulent Western Pennsylvanians. Usually, it's a case of cherry-picking whichever regional pro teams are doing the best at the time.

I doubt there's a Browns fan under the age of 45 left in Erie these days.
