Quote:
.....

- The president tweeted Friday that based on the recommendations of Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan and Congressman Don Young, he will be issuing a presidential permit approving the A2A Rail project. The project would build a new rail line from Fort McMurray, Alta., through the Northwest Territories and Yukon to the Delta Junction in Alaska, where it will connect with existing rail and continue on to ports near Anchorage. The 2,570-kilometre railway could move cargo like oil, potash and ore, container goods, or even passengers.

Man arrested for swiping batteries from Revel scooters: report

MAYA RAJAMANI
SEPTEMBER 28, 2020 - 6:37 PM

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 44-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stripping Revel scooters for parts earlier this month, according to a report.

The man was arrested on Friday for swiping batteries from the scooters on two separate occasions, police sources told the New York Post. Police weren’t immediately able to provide additional details about the arrest or the thefts.

Last week, the 77th Precinct, which includes parts of Crown Heights and Prospect Heights in Brooklyn, asked residents to call 911 if they saw anyone “tampering” with a Revel scooter.

Drone carries human kidney over Las Vegas desert in what could be the future of organ transportation

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...da/3528614001/

Quote:
.....

- Researchers at MissionGO, a provider of unmanned aviation solutions, and the Nevada Donor Network, an organ procurement organization, announced last week two successful test flights carrying a human organ and tissue via drones in Las Vegas. — The first flight on Sept. 17 transported research corneas from one hospital to another about 2½ miles away. On the same day, a second flight delivered research kidneys 10 miles, from an airport to a location outside a small town in the Las Vegas desert.

What a weird concept. Seems like a solution in search of a problem. How does a disabled person manage to live in a brownstone like that anyway? Do they have to call a taxi every time they go out?

Clearly they have to live on the first floor only, unless the building is equipped with an elevator or chairlift.

Boom Rolls Out A Supersonic Jet

https://www.thetechie.de/2020/10/boo...sonic-jet.html

Quote:
.....

- Boom Supersonic, an aerospace upstart looking to bring back commercial supersonic air travel, has debuted its first supersonic jet, the XB-1. The new jet, still a prototype and a demonstrator version for a much larger plane, is set for a test flight for the first time ever next year, a flight that Boom says will be carbon-neutral in response to concerns of its supersonic jet burning lots of fossil fuel and causing higher-than-normal pollution. --- The new prototype aircraft is a predecessor and akin to a lab rat for the much larger Overture aircraft that Boom is working on, one that's expected to ferry passengers at supersonic speeds between destinations. The XB-1 supersonic jet is acting as a test bed for the more complex and sophisticated Overture that's targeted to be put into service by 2030. Being a test aircraft, the Boom XB-1 is equipped with just one seat for a pilot compared to the Overture which is planned to hold up to 88 passengers.

Aberdeen trials hydrogen buses

https://techxplore.com/news/2020-11-...gen-buses.html

Quote:
.....

- The 15 vehicles emit water vapour instead of carbon monoxide and are in the final stages of testing before being put into service on the city's most popular routes. The buses will use an existing hydrogen production and refuelling station that was opened in 2015 to fill up with the universe's most abundant element. — "At the moment Aberdeen produces 500 kilograms of green hydrogen every day," said Philip Bell, Aberdeen City Council's hydrogen spokesman. "Our plan is to have a hydrogen hub in three years that will produce three and a half tonnes of the gas a day," he told AFP.

South Korea's Hyper-Tube Train Hits Major Milestone, Reaches Over 621 MPH

https://interestingengineering.com/s...s-over-621-mph

Quote:
.....

- The Korean Railroad Research Institute (KORAIL) announced on Wednesday that its hyper-tube train reached speeds over 621 mph (1,000 km/h) during a test. This marks a major milestone in the move towards faster trains. — Once Korea's hyper-tube train is up and running, one of its plans is to cut the journey from Seoul to Busan from three hours and thirty minutes down to just thirty minutes. — KORAIL stated that "We have overcome the problem of vehicle driving obstacles caused by rapid acceleration driving friction in the accelerator section of the aerodynamic test system and exceeded the speed of 1000 km/h."

England approves running a $2.2 billion highway under Stonehenge

https://www.archpaper.com/2020/11/en...er-stonehenge/

Quote:
.....

- On the surface (no pun intended), it seems to make sense: The busy A303 highway runs adjacent to Stonehenge, creating obvious visual, noise, and air pollution along what should otherwise be a scenic historic site and popular tourist attraction. Widening the A303 to a double-road highway and burying a two-mile stretch below Stonehenge for a cool $2.2 billion (£1.7 billion) would obviously alleviate that, knitting the pastoral site back into its surroundings and uncorking a bottleneck that stretch of A303 currently carries twice the amount of traffic it was built for. — Of course, preservationists, archeologists, druids (as The Guardian noted), and local farmers are all dismayed, and invaluable historic treasures may be at risk. Only just this June, using remote sensing, archeologists from the University of Bradford discovered a ring of underground manmade shafts running two miles around Stonehenge. The discovery of the approximately 4,500-year-old shafts, each stretching 16 feet deep and 33 feet across, held up construction of the A303 expansion which was originally slated to begin in July.

- According to the report made by inspectors, the underground road, a two-mile section of an eight-mile-long extension, could potentially cause “substantial harm” to Stonehenge’s visual and cultural heritage as well as irreparably damage the landscape. Ultimately, the inspectors recommended against the project, according to The Guardian, releasing their findings in January, but the report has only now been made public. Because the tunnel entrances and exits would fall within the heritage zone, one member of the A303 scientific committee is reportedly worried that up to half-a-million historic artifacts could be destroyed during construction. — English Heritage, a charity that manages over 400 historic sites and monuments across England and is working with the A303 on the project, celebrated the decision as a first step towards reuniting Stonehenge with its surrounding landscape. Critics, however, don’t agree. The grassroots Stonehenge Alliance has already received over 150,000 combined signatures across its two petitions to halt the tunnel.

Growth of some Chinese metro systems

Beijing, currently world's largest and busiest metro system, 690km route length, ridership 3,950m

Shanghai (world's second largest and busiest -676km, 3,880m ridership)

Guangzhou (3rd largest and busiest, soon to be the world's largest, nearing 1,000km length in the next few years)

Shenzhen -4th largest (not to scale) but vying with Guangzhou to be the future no 1. But also will likely join up with it.

Nanjing -this for comparison is currently about the same size as NYC's system

Chengdu

Wuhan

Chongqing

Tianjin

Hong Kong
