Notice how I dispensed with the whole "Great Canadian..." (bothered me).

Anyhow, I thought it would be a cool topic for a thread. We will start with (what else) a little Montreal (one of the world capitals of underground cityscapes), and the Ville Marie Expressway (Tunnel), arguably Canada's only underground urban highway of significant length (I suppose some could say that Decarie is another, as it is below grade but for the most part, not a tunnel, although parts of it are covered). The Ville-Marie Tunnel may be falling apart, but few things scream "big city" as much as driving through it: diving under the skyscrapers, to emerge 5 minutes later on the other side, and then another, shorter (Viger) tunnel.

Ugh .... I hate driving through tunnels like that. Makes me feel very claustrophobic. Haven't been to Montreal's, but Boston and Seattle both made me a little queasy going through theirs.

Great thread idea. I'll never find it now but yesterday I viewed a recently-posted gallery of aerial views of Canada. There was an awesome shot of Montreal's density but also one of a highway disappearing into an underwater tunnel. Gorgeous shots. And very sexy infrastructure.

Ottawa has one tunnel, used by the O-Train, under a lake. There used to be a bridge over the lake but the tunnel was added as part of the NCC's efforts to overhaul rail traffic through Ottawa in the 1960s.

I love driving in the Ville-Marie tunnel. Just feels so cool!

Other than the downtown subway u/c, the O-Train tunnel as mentioned, St-Laurent Station and a fairly small underground mall at Place de Ville, we don't have much of this infrastructure here. We also have a wide avenue in Hull that goes under the huge Place du portage Federal Complex that feels like a tunnel, but probably doesn't count.

The City of Ottawa is studying the construction of a roughly 2 km tunnel under Lower Town to remove all unnecessary truck traffic from King Edward Avenue and Rideau Street.

Obligatory comment regarding how Calgary punches above it's weight in terms of digging per capita holes in the ground.

Not much of note under the ground in Winnipeg apart from the modest network of underground concourses downtown (the above-grade network is much bigger) and the various utility tunnels that University of Manitoba students use to get around their campus.
