The top one looks similar to that Libeskind proposal that we were talking about recently (NYGuy) - the one that was going to be an addition atop 1 Madison Ave. Maybe it took some cues...

Source: DBOX CCA

The second one seems to be more in line with the Calatrava stacked boxes proposal from years ago. At least conceptually.

Meanwhile, the skyline waits...

I wish we could see more of those designs.

2nd design is my favorite. The one in post #563.

Kinda resembles a giant orbital rail-gun (Halo reference)

I really can't decide which one I like better. I like both.

Although one thing I do know is that the people who buy units in the skinny new tower next door are going to be pissed when they lose their views!

Love the second one, we need the tall skinnies down in Lower Manhattan to balance

I feel like we're getting closer and closer to the day where we will see some of those awful 1970s Water St towers get re-skins or dramatic structural renovations. Here's looking at you 55.

^ If that does happen I just hope they don't half-ass it like the Verizon Building.

Ditto. I don't doubt they'll finish the rest one of these days though...

Oh how I wish they could do something with those oversized appliances that took some of the glamour off the Lower Manhattan skyline. I don't like any of them.

One man's idea of character deficit in this case is this man's being cool with the status quo. Maybe both NYP towers could've used a 500' boost or thereabouts.

C'est la vie.

2nd design is my favorite. Is there the chance that it becomes real?

Glad we dodged that bullet. Those are some very large office towers.

It all depends on where the designs are from and who they were for.

But whatever design ultimately comes forward for this tower, it's going to be a dramatic change to the east river skyline, that's for sure. And 45 Broad will make a nice companion.

I was thinking about all of the older proposals for this site, and came across this older one. It was a tower for the smaller footprint.

https://www.behance.net/gallery/7623...0-South-Street

Quote:
The gateway site at the seaport district in Lower Manhattan presents spectacular design opportunities. The proposed building is consisted of a hotel and residential tower that together serve as a great contributor to the urban landscape and a desirable living environment for its residents. A signature project in New York City, this proposal also maximizes structural and planning efficiency given the high cost of land and construction in NYC. All together the project aims to create a marketable lifestyle unique to the vision of the team and this beautifully historic site.

Named “Spire“ the proposed tower design draws inspirations from many of the classical spire skyscrapers of the 20th Century. The massing results in floor plates that are bigger at the top of the building than they are at the middle and bottom. The views will be unparalleled to all directions. The facades accentuate the positioning of the tower by having strong biases in the East and West directions.

Yueqi Li collaborated on this project at Ennead Architects as senior designer

This is great just for the clueless comments alone (which you will have to read in the link)...

New rendering released today for 80 South street, which will likely be the tallest skyscraper in NYC. The luxury residential Skyscraper is being developed by China Oceanwide and is designed by KPF. While the exact height has not been released yet, our sources confirm heights taller than any tower built or planned in the city.
