Meanwhile London commuters have to stand for an hour on crowded tiny trains that have to fit through tiny 19th century tunnels. Nothing's perfect.

Although Wikipedia says there are 7000 level crossings in the UK and 15,000 in France. Seems like they're still pretty common in most countries.

I wouldn't call Glenview a "major American city". It's a sleepy burb 20 miles outside of Chicago.

We have rail lines spidering out all over the burbs from the hub of Chicago. Thousands of street crossings. We're supposed to tunnel or bridge over all of them? Maybe a few key arterials could use that. But it's simply not an efficient use of time, labor or environmental impact to do so. At grade crossings are how the railroads were built. And that's how they're going to stay, for this century at least.

One more of Albion Evanston. I really like how this came out. When it opens it will help the area a lot.

Wish they would paint those god-awful viaducts... maybe even put up a decent railing? I know, crazy right?

^ agreed, the steel metra viaducts through Evanston are in an absolutely embarrassing state of disrepair. I can't believe that the city of Evanston doesn't have the political sway to force metra to do something about them. and it's not like it's a new problem, theyve been like that for decades.

Total eye sores. They are scheduled to at least upgrade the Davis and Dempster viaducts with a "sand and repaint."

They must still pass all the structural stress tests I suppose.

It's not Metra who's responsible, it's Union Pacific. And the policy of pretty much all freight railroads is that they will only repaint their bridges if the deterioration has started to affect the safety of the structure.

Unfortunately Evanston has very little leverage over a Class I railroad valued at over $100bn.

I've thought for a long time that Metra should just cut a deal with Union Pacific to take over this line up to North Chicago and the Northwest line up to Des Plaines. Neither is really needed for freight anymore, and the relative wealth of the communities along these lines probably means they won't be seeing any new industrial customers anytime soon. But Metra doesn't want to be responsible for even more miles of track to maintain, when their budget is already pretty thin... so the politicians would have to broker the deal and cram it down Metra's throat.

And now to be a total hypocrite, since my image host died...

A new construction start for downtown Elmhurst. The medical building on Addison is gone, lot cleared and what looked like a small Case rig setting up.
This is the southern of the two proposals from early this year on Addison.

For the north building, topped out and windows going in.

That building on Addison in Elmhurst is definitely under construction. The Case rig was drilling yesterday.

Building is now called The Flynn. Slightly updated rendering here. Apparently Elmhurst demanded the facade be all brick and waived some fees to make that happen.

Old McDonalds HQ in Oak Brook is almost gone. Just the core is left, won't be up for much longer.
