Houston - A Few (Mostly Drone) Shots Taken Last Week

Went back last week to celebrate a friend's birthday. My first time back since the pandemic began. Didn't have much time for a lot of photos.

These are mostly drone shots. Mostly the north side of Downtown because of some new construction I hadn't seen. A few of the new modern wing of the Museum of Fine Arts. A few taken from above where I was staying.

Sorry for the repetitive nature of these... as I said, I didn't get a chance to do much photographing. All photos are clickable and lead to larger versions on Flickr.

Thanks for sharing these! I think this one is my favorite. I like how you got the canyon view through downtown, with the bridge/river/green in the foreground. Also a nice mix of buildings, architecturally, from this angle.

From that odd angle you've spotted it's hard for me (as senior skylien fan) to identify Houston at first moment, thought it was a little bit of uh... Denver or one Canadian city.

Agree. This isn't the view that is classic downtown Houston. But with the recent construction, this angle has become much more attractive than it was, even though it doesn't show nearly the entire expanse of downtown. I think we'll see a lot more photos coming from this view.

Thanks! That green space across the bayou is Allen's Landing, where the Allen Brothers of New York started their real estate scam which ended up being Houston.

That classic, western face, seen from Buffalo Bayou Park view is the worst. I REALLY dislike that view from close up and from a distance, while not as bad, it's still just too common.

As new construction in Downtown moves north and east, as well as there being new developments north and east of Downtown, these views from different angles will be more common.

Love that last shot facing downtown towards the bayou/ bridge. I used to take night classes at UHD and loved looking out at downtown.

Many years ago, the UHD building was the M&M building. In the 50s and 60s, my grandmother worked for Hershey (as in chocolate) in that building. We would visit her every weekend, and we would take home M&Ms, Hershey bars, etc.. Very fond memories. I never actually went inside that building.

I've always like the western face you mention, but yeah it's way too common, and doesn't show a good enough variety of styles. It seems like almost every photo one sees is that view. One of the best is from the UH campus south of downtown. When I was in high school, I would go to the UH library to do research for term papers, and always loved looking out of the library windows toward downtown to the north.

Yep. The northwest and southeast views are the most impressive.

I’m afraid Austin has a ways to go.

Took me a second to figure out what you meant. We call it MFAH, and yes, it is very nice. Especially the interior. I recommend it highly...especially on Thursdays...when admission is free to the public.

Also worth a look is the Glassell School of Art which is next to it.

I can only imagine what it was like before UH took it over but it's a pretty neat old building (two buildings actually) and pretty well preserved.

To be clear, the "M & M" name stood for "Merchants and Manufacturers Building."

Here's an old photo with water tanks on top. Wish it still had the tanks.

The water tanks gave it a NYC vibe since you still see that with a lot of buildings up there.
