New e-Gates at Kaohsiung airport 'to help foreigners'

CNA Friday, July 8, 2016, 12:07 am TWN

Two new e-Gates have begun a trial run at Kaohsiung International Airport, Taiwan's second largest airport, to speed up immigration clearance for foreign travelers to Taiwan, the National Immigration Agency said Wednesday.

The trial run, which started July 1 and is expected to last until the end of the year, is a response to the growing number of foreign visitors to the country, the agency said.

The new e-Gates at the Kaohsiung airport are for the exclusive use of short-term overseas visitors aged 14 and above, including those from China, Hong Kong and Macau — enabling them to clear immigration automatically when they leave the country.

Foreign travelers do not have to apply for the service, but they do need to leave their fingerprints when they enter Taiwan to be eligible to use it when they depart.

The e-Gate system, which was launched at Taiwan's major airports for Taiwanese citizens in 2011 and foreign residents in 2012, is a fully automated immigration system that can save a lot of time for passengers when leaving or arriving in the country.

That system processes an average of 30,000 entries and exits a day, the agency said.

The e-Gates installed at the Kaohsiung airport are the first ones in Taiwan that cater to non-resident foreign travelers.

After the trial run in Kaohsiung, the new service will be expanded to other major airports in Taiwan, including Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, the country's main gateway, starting early next year, the agency said.

Taoyuan airport's Terminal 2 to be closed in 2021 for renovation
2017/08/23 14:06:53

A plan of Terminal 3 in Taoyuan Airport (From www.taoyuan-airport.com)
Taipei, Aug. 23 (CNA) Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport's second terminal will be closed two years for renovation after the new Terminal 3 comes into service in 2021, said Tseng Dar-jen (曾大仁), chairman of Taoyuan International Airport Corp. on Wednesday.

The airport operator decided to overhaul Terminal 2's aging power and water supply systems to prevent further problems that could affect the terminal's operations after two power outages at the terminal in 2014 and 2016, respectively, according to Tseng.

The renovation will focus on replacing electrical wiring, water pipes and the air conditioning system, and the work is expected to take two years to complete, Tseng said in an interview with CNA.

Terminal 3 is expected to be completed by 2020 and will be officially put into service in 2021 following a six-month trial run, Tseng said, and because the new terminal is capable of handling 45 million passengers per year, the period after it opens will be the best time to shut down Terminal 2, Tseng said.

The company has initially decided to move the carriers operating out of Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 at the end of 2021.

Terminal 2 opened in July 2000 with a capacity of 17 million passengers to reduce heavy congestion in the aging Terminal 1, Tseng said.

With significant growth in passenger traffic in the airport during the past few years, the airport company began a project in 2015 to expand Terminal 2's capacity by 5 million passengers per year, with work expected to be completed in 2018, Tseng said.

So what is solution from DDP? DDP blame KMT for not solving this problem during KMT ruling. Now since DDP take government for almost 2 years, this problem has not been solved. Ruling party and opposition party should work out the solution together, not just blame each other.
