The hutongs must have a fascinating community aspect to them.

Cool, man. I should still be around these parts then. Get at me when you're here, and I'll take you to some sweet spots.

You're very lucky to have direct connections to China. I have many friends in Shanghai. It is one of my loves.

I recently lost my job here in Houston and am thinking about going back to China to teach English. My best friend still lives in Beijing and teaches English at a university there. He says I can get a job teaching English to kids pretty easily. But most likely not in a huge city like Beijing but in second tier cities like Qingdao, etc. These photographs are probably some of the best Ive ever taken and I cant pass up a chance to live in China again. So, hopefully sooner than later you guys will start seeing tons of Chinese threads by me.

Question: How long was the bike ride from Beijing to the non-tourist parts of the Great Wall? I'd like to go someday.

Bike ride there? Shit that would take a long long long time. It was a good 3 hour drive so like a day or more by bike.

kewl, since your question those years ago Ive found out the hutongs around the Bell and Drum towers were slated to become yet another Ye Olde Chinese Town. The initial plan was to demolish the much disfigured lot (the 20th century add-ons, plastic shopfronts etc) and 'do a Qianmen' where the old buildings would be reconstructed from old photos, from scratch. However since the local uproar the plans have been shelved and as far as I know these hutongs still survive. I think the Muslim area of town is near there too, and plans for Ye Olde Silk Route Town centred around the main mosque were set.

If youre thereabouts again, do report back on what happened.

Cant wait for your next series

I have been wanting to move back to Asia ever since living in China briefly way back then in 2007. I am seriously wanting to move to Mumbai, there arent any good paying jobs for me here in Merka other than in the oil and gas industry which I want no part of ever again. Im dating a girl right now whose from Mumbai and she said I could find a job there easily being a white educated American. I'm tired of living a meager existence in America, time to move on. Ive been toying around with the idea to move back there for years, but I think Im going to take the leap this time for real.

Man, to live in China for a few years when you are young, and before you are encumbered by family, etc. I would totally go for it. I spent ten days in Shanghai and environs (2012, Summer) and I absolutely loved it.

Thought Id bump this thread, even with the awful photo bucket logo all over the photos; was getting nostalgic about my earlier life.
