I wonder what percentage the next 5 total up to then? maybe 20%?

This link to Brandeis study (not sure it is the most recent, but it says 2020 figures) that has all the major metros and their estimated Jewish population. Some of the numbers seem high to me. DFW at 85,000 and Austin at 38,000 are the highest numbers I've seen for those two metros. Atlanta seemed a bit low at 104,000.

Around 40% in New York, LA and South Florida; 60% if one adds Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, DC and the Bay Area.

^ thanks.

More than most other groups, Jews in the US really do heavily cluster in the biggest and most urban metro areas.

So what are the numbers for Chicagoland and Bostonland from that study?

The link austlar posted isn't working for me.

Chicagoland

Chicago MSA
315,300 / 9,152,799 (3.4%)

Missing Bureau, LaSalle, Putnam, and La Porte Counties, which are grouped with a whole bunch of other counties that are not part of the CSA

Washington-Baltimore

Washington MSA
235,000 / 6,190,245 (3.8%)

Baltimore MSA
123,000 / 2,722,905 (4.5%)

Allegany*, St. Mary's, Cecil, Somerset*, Caroline*, Garrett*, Washington, Wicomico*, Dorchester*, Talbot, Worcester*, and Kent Counties
7,900 / 746,211 (1.1%)

Total: 374,900 / 9,659,361 (3.9%)

* Not part of CSA; those extra counties have a combined total population about about 340-345K

Excluded because of mass grouping: Missing Berkeley, Morgan, and Hampshire Counties in WV; Franklin County, PA; Frederick County, VA — total population of about 410,000

The inclusion of the extraneous MD counties probably balances out the total.

Chicago's Jewish population is almost all in Cook and Lake counties. Very few in the western and southern suburbs.

In DC, Montgomery has traditionally been the "Jewish suburb" though good numbers now live in Virginia now.

That's all good because:

A. Those counties likely contain very few Jews.

And

B. You have to have a pretty savage crack addiction to believe those cornbelt counties are actually a part of Chicagoland anyway.

Steely Dan, the Brandeis link works for me on my desktop, but on my phone, I had to download the PDF (there is a prompt) in order to open the full report. Not sure why that is the case, but it is well worth opening because there is a wealth of information about the distribution of Jewish population in all the US metros, large and not so large.

Jewish percentage by CSA:

NYC — 9.4-9.5%
South Florida — 7.8-7.9%
Philly — 4.7-4.8%
Boston — 4.3-4.4%
LA and DC — 3.8%
Chicago — 3.4%
Bay Area — 3-3.1%

LA and DC are basically tied. BalWash might be ahead by a few thousandth percentage points. But LA County is 5.3% Jewish across a population of 9.9+ million.

^ It's grouped with Frederick County.

92,100 / 1,333,183 (6.9%)

Montgomery by itself is probably around 7.3% Jewish — give or take.

Pretty sure almost all those numbers are in Montgomery, which is probably around 90,000 (8-9% of the population). Lower than I thought, but then again the county is less than half NHW.

The map is color-coded, and the shade of blue indicates that Frederick County is in the 5-9% range.

If we assume the lower bound of 5%, that makes Montgomery County at most 7.4% Jewish. That's still pretty high for a county of 1.1 million people. Not Nassau, Westchester, or Bergen numbers, but still impressive.

So the 10%+ Jewish counties are:

Rockland NY
Brooklyn NY
Palm Beach FL
Manhattan NY
Nassau NY
Ocean NJ
Westchester NY
Bergen NJ

All in NY, NJ and FL.

If I may all too conveniently cherry pick for a moment, factoring out SB:

691,500 / 16,466,899 (4.2%)

Factoring out the IE:

661,500 / 14,016,602 (4.7%)

I'm surprised that Riverside's numbers aren't higher given the density of Jewish infrastructure in the Coachella Valley. I also find Ventura County's numbers even more impressive after realizing that Agoura Hills* and Westlake Village are actually in LA County.

*Agoura Hills is a small community of 20,000, and for whatever reason, it's home to an Israeli community that numbers 600+.

Putnam County might be as well. It's grouped with Rockland, but the map indicates that it's at least 9%.

% of NHW would also be interesting to see.
