We've discussed LA's radium quackery before. I don't recall this ad. The item seems to cure just about anything except ingrown toenails.

While I was looking for more information for odinthor's 'Fizzrin', I came across the Sputnik themed Fizz-Nik'.

They screwed open to hold a scoop of ice cream, and when closed back up one end went into a glass soda pop bottle.

Sept. 1, 1948: Actor Robert Mitchum, age 31, and starlet Lila Leeds were reportedly caught smoking marijuana
during a police raid at the actress’ Hollywood Hills home. Two others were also arrested.

Mitchum told police that he and another friend were in the neighborhood looking to buy a house when they stopped
to visit Leeds and her roommate, dancer Vickie Evans.

The actor said he had trouble finding the home on Ridpath Drive, which one narcotics agent described
as “ideally situated to be a ‘reefer resort.’ It is perched on a hillside, with no near neighbors, and well-screened by shrubbery.”

Mitchum said: “The girls let us in and five minutes later Vickie went to answer the door and the police entered.”

Following his arrest, the actor “was by turns as full of remorse as one would expect from a top-bracket star,” the newspaper said.
“At other times he was full of philosophy as one might expect from an up-from-the-ranks player who once said he arrived in California
by bus with his wife and only $26.”

Satellite view: The red line is Route 66. I believe the caption indicated the purple line was just the shortest route from downtown to Santa Monica. I don't know about the yellow line.

I was wondering if other parts of Los Angeles commemorate Route 66 and its history? I know of three "Historic Route 66" markers in West Hollywood.

In 2010, in conjunction with the Museum of Neon Art, the city had an exhibition placed along the median on Santa Monica Blvd. of some neon road signs, originally fond along Route 66. There were also color brochures distributed with locations of current neon signs along the route still in existence.

I wish the neon exhibition was still here. A few photos:

Some of the newspapers at the time quoted the caption almost verbatim, so I believe it says:

HOLLYWOOD, CAL.: Deputy sheriffs of the anti-vice squad swooped down on the Vet's Club, an "after hours" nightspot, at four a.m. this morning(10/1), nabbing 27 men and 9 women who were taken to the county jail for booking on either gambling or vagrancy charges. Among those taken were Earl Carroll Show Girl Marie L'Angelle (L) and Dancer Vicki Evans (R). Ms Evans was one of four arrested a month ago in a marijuana raid involving actor Robert Mitchum. The girls are shown as they awaited booking in the county jail.

The description tells us two details which aren't in the title: the building is at 332 North Rodeo Drive, and it was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The spike has lost its tip, but the rest of the building has only been slightly modified.

An article at dangerousminds.net names the address as 8443 Ridpath Drive. The current view below shows a house set on the hillside above the roadway. There's a 1948 view at Historic Aerials (the same year as the arrest), but it's too blurry to make out much other than that there weren't many other houses on the north side of Ridpath Drive.

I could also be wrong. "HE" was also an abbreviation for HEmpstead and other possible exchange nicknames.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_exchange_names Per relevant CDs, The Hollywood Furniture Co. was located at the printed address from at least '29 through the '39 and maybe longer.

Although I vaguely remember Fizzies, I remember thinking they were not much more than Bromo-Seltzer or Alka Seltzer (without the bromine or sodium bicarbonate) for kids. Of course the name, Bromo-Seltzer, was a staple for virtually every early drug store pictured on NLA.
