I wonder how long it will take them to finish that plaza? It looks like they have poor 277 in a cage.

Right! The old, the new, and the temporary (old Bear Stearn building) all in the same shots. Its really cool
When you look at that photo, you also see the space that Chase temporarily leased opposite 383 Madison (on the right) as well as a glimpse of 277 Park.
They all hold Chase employees, and give a provide a good view of the new tower going up.

The Bear Stearns building isn't going anywhere. It's an A+ quality trophy HQ building built 20 years ago, with direct access to Grand Central.
The Grand Central-area rezoning will yield a ton of new towers, but it isn't like every single office tower will be replaced. There are plenty of towers that will remain. Some historic/landmarked, and some newer, and of trophy quality.
But the crappier blocks, the more lowrise/midrise blocks, are gonna see supertalls.

I don't think he's suggesting it will be demolished, just that you can see multiple Chase buildings. However, there was speculation that 383 could be sold when the new headquarters opens.

....Gottesdiener, now a consulting partner at SOM, has designed a two-million-square-foot mixed use tower to replace it. The 1,653-foot-high building will be half again as tall as the Chrysler Building, immediately across Lexington Avenue, making the art deco masterpiece invisible from the west.
But Jon McMillan, the director of planning for TF Cornerstone, co-developer of the building, argues that the Chrysler Building is already obscured by One Vanderbilt, the brand new 1,401-foot-high KPF tower just west of Grand Central Terminal, and that his much taller building, on the east side of the terminal, will at least provide a neutral backdrop for William Van Alen’s classic spire. (Renderings showing the relationship of the new building to its 1930 neighbor have not yet been released, though McMillan says “they’re coming.”)
Meanwhile, views of Chrysler from the northeast will be erased by Foster + Partner’s new tower at 270 Park Avenue, expected to top out at more than 1,400 feet. McMillan says he believes the three supertalls will have a “lovely relationship” and that “a new Manhattan skyline is emerging."
Sounds lovely.

Incredible photos.
Truly a great moment in New York history
This is currently the greatest show in town as far as I'm concerned. And it's the most exciting stage of this project, at least until the facade starts to go on.
We now have the southside columns going up as well, giving us a true feel for how this tower will take shape along Madison Avenue, even as demo finalizes on the Park Ave end.
I think the cantilever will be higher than depicted in the early rendering, and based on the DOB filings, but you get the idea...

I find it interesting to see this building under construction in front of 383 Madison. You can sort of see how high-rise architecture has evolved already since the turn of the 21st century. Also, the juxtaposition of that, the former Bear Stearns headquarters, and the new headquarters of the company that bought them after the '08 crisis, as it rises across the street. We've come a long way.

I believe it already is, insane how far along this is btw
It's been in the construction forum for a while now. The building has been under construction a lot longer.
But it's moving along now, and I'm thinking it wasn't that long ago when we were at this stage with Vanderbilt. This construction will go by quickly. So enjoy it while it last!
