BRIDGEPORT -- Building a second train station on the city's East Side is not only feasible, but could serve as an important catalyst to revitalize two low-income neighborhoods with more than 700 acres of vacant and under-utilized land.
Getting to that point, though, will require lots of time, money and infrastructure changes. Most notably, city streets would have to be realigned and tunnels would have to be carved in the railroad's stone viaduct.
That's what local residents, stakeholders and officials were told Thursday during back-to-back meetings of committees formed to help draft a feasibility study for a proposed P.T. Barnum Station on a 7-acre parcel on Barnum Avenue.
"We feel pretty confident you can put a (Metro-North) station here and it will work," said Ken Schwartz, principal and director of planning for Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc., a Massachusetts-based planning and engineering firm.

I'm not opposed to this as I am with the East Stamford Station....or the Fairfield Metro Station...

My Proposals for Branch Upgrades....

My Proposed Improvements to the Waterbury Branch , Trackage upgraded to 80mph , Hourly off peak Bi-Directional Service , High Level Stations , DMU Trains providing Faster acceleration and cheaper to operate , all crossings gated and upgraded. 2 New Passing Sidings constructed for Option A and 6 for Option B along with 3 Grade Separations.

I'm beating the Drums on the Beacon/Maybrook line....if the Central Corridor and Lewiston Commuter Rail can be pushed along , then theres no harm with the Beacon/Maybrook lines. Trackage Replaced and upgraded to 60mph , all Crossings upgraded , Service Hourly , with limited peak service to White Plains from Connecticut/Poughkeepsie and to New Haven from Poughkeepsie/Danbury. DMU's should be purchased here...

The public hearings of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority have long been an exercise in commuter catharsis.

So, what does it look like when the authority has good news to deliver?

On Wednesday, Fernando Ferrer, the authority’s acting chairman, and a cadre of transit officials endeavored to find out. Under state guidelines, the authority is required to hold a public hearing whenever it adjusts a part of its service by 25 percent or more. And in the rarest of turns, officials said, the authority held a hearing whose sole focus was not a decrease, but an increase in service: more frequent off-peak railroad service at the Spuyten Duyvil, Riverdale and Irvington stations along Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson Line.

The Rep-Am reported today that the Connecticut Legislature just approved a bill that will plan for the New Canaan, Danbury, and Waterbury branches of Metro North to be electrified in the next decade by 2023.

Passenger rail line is pondered
Waterbury, Berlin would be linked

WATERBURY — The idea of building a passenger railroad between Waterbury and Berlin is again being considered as part of a state Department of Transportation study of rail service in central Connecticut.

One of the options is to retool a freight railroad owned by Pan-Am Railways for commuter use.

WATERBURY -- A presentation on a proposed central Connecticut rail line also included discussion about the current state of transportation to and from the city.

About a dozen residents and officials attended a hearing Monday put on by the state Department of Transportation on the rail study, which is looking at several alternatives that would connect Waterbury with New Britain and Berlin.

Alternatives include running a passenger line on a railroad freight line operated by Pan Am Railways, bus service and light rail.

Even if everything went according to plan (on schedule and properly funded) they are anticipating that the service would take at least a decade to start.

Train station upgrade to begin with demolition

WATERBURY — Plans to upgrade the Waterbury Train Station are moving forward — slower than some had hoped, but on target for an intricate project that involves multiple government agencies.

In December, the State Bonding Commission approved $1.7 million for the city to raze a dilapidated building in front of the train station and improve the parking lot.

Although the funding comes from the state, the project is being managed by Waterbury Development Corp. in conjunction with the state Department of Transportation.

ELIZABETH — A total of $55 million in state and federal money will fund the construction of a new two-story building and train platforms at the city's midtown NJ Transit Station, a project officials hailed today as an economic driver.

"This project is not just about the rail, it's not just about the station," U.S. Sen. Cory Booker said during an event outside the station. "This will be an economic accelerator for the city of Elizabeth. It'll increase housing values, it'll spur business growth, it'll create jobs and expand opportunity. This is a tremendous day for the city of Elizabeth and for the region."

Booker, Sen. Robert Menendez and Rep. Albio Sires joined state, city and NJ Transit officials and Union County freeholders to unveil the designs for the new station.

"This area is going through a renaissance, and this is just going to help it," Sires said. "It's going to create jobs, people are going to move into the area because of easy access to moving back and forth, and you need a train station that's adequate."

KEARNY -- Leaving a legacy for future generations of Kearny residents was the theme running through Mayor Al Santos’s annual state-of-the-town address at Tuesday’s reorganization meeting.

As he outlined priorities for 2015, Santos noted that elected officials many years ago had the vision to pursue long-term plans including the construction of the Gunnel Oval athletic complex and Riverbank Park that benefit today’s residents.

For Santos, the modern-day equivalent of that vision includes persuading NJ Transit to revive plans to construct a new train station on Bergen Avenue below Schuyler Avenue. The transit agency had targeted Kearny for a station years ago, but scuttled the plan when Gov. Chris Christie canceled the ARC tunnel project to build a new Hudson River transit tunnel.

Now, with bi-state concerns about train capacity and the poor condition of existing tunnels, Santos figures the time is ripe to present Kearny’s case.

“This is one thing I have not given up on,” he said. “I think the state will have to reverse its nearsightedness on that issue.”

Haven't heard about anything like that, at the meeting or otherwise.

Anyway, the main gist of the meeting was that the purchase of 2 new locomotives would probably be sufficient to increase the OTP, which was a big complaint of riders at the meeting. Also, adding a single siding would double the capacity of the line, and if I heard correctly, adding a second siding would increase capacity 6X. Longer term expansions to Torrington or Bristol/New Britain aren't on the radar currently.

I think the Waterbury Branch will take a backseat to any real upgrades and extensions till the other branches and SLE get there expansions... Torrington can wait another 10-15 years while Bristol/New Britain might be more urgent with the I-84 Rebuild.
