Road Trip to West Coast: Summer 2020

In June 2020, my wife and I accompanied our older son out to San Francisco for an internship with their planning department. We had five days to drive from Ohio to San Francisco and managed to stop and explore various towns and cities along the way out west.

Lawrence, Kansas is home to Kansas University, which has a very hilly campus that has lots of cool buildings, but is hard to photograph. Luckily their downtown is pretty vibrant and has lots of indie businesses:

Junction City Kansas had a great collection of older stone buildings:

Also stopped in Salina, Kansas. They recently upgraded their Main Street with brick pavers and street furniture. Though, I'm not sure if I care for the metallic structures that overhang either end of the downtown retail district:

Hays, Kansas was next: Another decent sized town with a good assortment of historic buildings in their downtown.

Great pictures so far! I like seeing random USA, like Hays and Elko. Junction City is one of those places that I always seem to fly over, no matter where I'm flying to. I must have seen it in half of my transcontinental flights. (Logansport, Indiana, is another place I always fly over.)

Thanks for your comments, everyone. This was my first driving trip to the west coast and I loved it! Loved it so much that I flew out to California and helped with the drive back to the midwest in late July/early August. But first, here's the rest of the first segment: Mostly random shots around San Francisco plus a quick drive down to Santa Cruz. And then the flight home via Seattle.

That Mira condo is interesting. And I like that building in the Mission District! I'd like to know about that, if anyone knows!

In late July, I flew out west to help out with the drive back from the west coast. Of course we had to take a different route back! Instead of I-70 and I-80, we took a more southerly route.

Here's a few photos from the flight from Columbus to San Francisco via Detroit:

After a full day's drive, we discovered a problem with my sons car in Winslow. The ignition wouldn't catch. I wanted to do a rewrite of "Take it Easy" with the line "Stranded on a corner in Winslow Arizona". Just as the AAA Truck pulled up, my son got the engine to turn over so we headed down the freeway to our hotel reservation in Holbrook, AZ.

The next morning, the car's ignition was still reluctant to start. After about 20 minutes of interval tries, we were successful. I had planned to stop and walk around Gallup, New Mexico. But with the car's difficulty in starting, we just kept on going to the nearest Hyundai dealership, which was in Albuquerque. So this is all I saw of Gallup:

Spent about 4 hours at the Hyundai dealership in Albuquerque, which really limited my hoped for plan to check out various cities and towns along the route. Had time for a quick drive through Albuquerque:

That photo of the Saltair Pavilion stopped me in my tracks. I recently watched the beautifully filmed but really kind of bad 1962 horror film Carnival of Souls which was partially filmed there.

Thanks for the comments!

Pedestrian: Our son rented a room in the 3rd floor of a home on Page Street--pretty close to you. He loved it!
Bilbao: The Saltair Pavilion in the early '60s movie burned down. The current one was built in 1981. The actual water in the Great Salt Lake is a LONG distance from the Pavilion.

Here's the rest of trip back to Ohio. Fortunately, we had no car problems and I had built in a decent amount of time to explore OK City, Tulsa, Joplin and Springfield. Of these places, I had been to Tulsa before but that was about 30 years ago.

While I wasn't that impressed with the heart of downtown Oklahoma City, the edges had some interesting areas. I'd like to know more about Film Row and the history of movies and OK City. The Myriad Gardens in downtown Oklahoma City was VERY impressive. It included a Botanical Garden, Sculpture, a children's play area, an Amphitheater, plus a dog park. I also liked the Bricktown District which provides lots of bars and restaurants close to their baseball stadium and convention center. Someone told me about automobile row after my trip so I missed that but hope to see it sometime in the future.

23rd Street on the city's north side includes several interesting buildings. I found out about this area after I was researching the gold domed performing arts center in Reno (shown previously). I found out there was another gold-domed structure in (you guessed it) Oklahoma City.

On Tulsa's south side is CityPlex Towers, which was originally known as City of Faith. It was built to fulfill a "vision" beheld by Oral Roberts for a huge medical center that the rest of Tulsa really didn't think it needed. It was built anyway, but reportedly only a fraction of the tower was ever finished out for its original purpose. Adjacent to Cityplex is the campus of Oral Roberts University, which I really like as its classic early-mid '60s space age/Jetsons era architecture (think Seattle's Worlds Fair):

Joplin MO looked pretty sleepy to me. I know that a terrible tornado destroyed a swath of the city south of downtown, which may explain why there were several vacant buildings along their Main Street.
On the other hand, Springfield looked reasonably lively. They have a nice town square in their downtown. On the way home, just had a quick drive through downtown St. Louis before heading straight to Ohio.

Nice pictures again!

Great picture of Yosemite! I love flying past national parks. I have flown past the Grand Canyon 5 times! I wonder if you flew past or over Great Basin National Park.

Where on Filbert Street was that steepest block?

Bakersfield is better than I thought it would be. I've heard it's depressing, but it has some nice buildings.

I love the pictures from I-40 through Arizona and New Mexico! I love driving that Interstate. The drive from Albuquerque to Flagstaff has great scenery the whole day.

Did you drive through that storm then?

I was going to ask about Film Row, but you wanted to know as well. What is Automobile Row?
