I'm certainly hoping I'm wrong, but I'm worried that it will be some kind of ill conceived desperation play, kind of like back in the 90s when the City wanted to give "Mr. Canada" Wayne Flett all the vacant theatres for his Nashville North bus tour scheme.

I guess the modern equivalent to that would be giving The Bay to Amazon or Facebook or something like that...

^ agreed. I hope it's a straight forward plan and not something that hinges on funding for a major (and somewhat obscure) aspect (i.e. museum, etc.).

Basement/Main Floor/ Second floor - commercial.
Third thru Six floors - residential/hotel or some combination of both.

Carve a central atrium down to the top of the second floor to make floor plates more manageable and add in windows.

Go.

^ the amount of times precisely this has been proposed here is too damn high (but I agree, that is what must be done)

The new residence appears to have an internal courtyard. Not sure how much direct sunlight gets in there.

Exactly the plan I envision as well. Commercial Lower level, main second... supermarket of course with some gourmet foods..bakery etc......hotel & residential has people coming & going all hours,Not office space, or not much pls.. dead zone with too much office space. Plus there is plenty to fill now.

There was a similar proposal to that sort of artist village for the Gas Station Theater.

That type of artist community would be perfect for a smaller scaled project, like the Watkins warehouse in Point Douglas. I don't think it would be appropriate for a massive historical landmark building like HBC in one of the city's most prominent locations. I'm also not sure that the likely benefactors of such a project would have the means to pull off such a massive and costly undertaking in a building that big.

My memory isn't what it used to be but isn't there north of $40M in funding already set aside from the Province and the City for whatever happens at The Bay? Isn't that enough of a head start on the conversion costs?

That $40m is strictly to preserve the heritage aspects of the building - facade, elevator bank etc.

$25 million. Provincial funding.

elevator bank...such a weird inclusion in the heritage list.

Some overly and weirdly sentimental guy on the committee who has fond childhood memories of waiting for an elevator there during the holiday rush like some scene out of a b grade hallmark movie.

Thanks for the rundown, Mr. Basketballgeek... I like the Terrasse Boisjoli, it came together nicely and has a unique look.

No problem. I was thinking of doing a rundown for the Southeast, Northwest, and Northeast as well later ok because frankly I’ve never seen so much multi-family residential construction in my life throughout suburban Winnipeg.
