i strongly disagree. not saying we don't need cops, or that some cops shouldn't be armed. but regardless of weather Chicago guy feels safer carrying an illegal gun, there's no evidence that guns in civilian hands make civilians safer. in fact, there's mounting evidence that states with more guns per household and less strict gun laws have higher rates of gun death than those with fewer GPH and stricter gun laws. and if you bother to look outside of the US, it couldn't be more obvious that more guns + weak laws = more death.

as for letting gang-bangers kill each other off, that's not how it works. if it were, they'd be extinct by now. the violence and the poverty and the culture infects generation after generation of children and leads to wave after wave criminals. more guns only makes it worse. it's pretty clear, not to mention obvious.

People are making fun of this because Doady is a serial satirist (look at this posting history), who is so skilled at his modest proposals that many don't seem to notice.

I'm old enough to remember when Houston had 701 murders in one year (1981).

Austin's worst year that I know of was 49 murders in 1991. We very nearly tied that last year with 48. Thing is, Austin is nearly 3 times the size now that it was in 1991.

It's not really safe, nowadays. What we need are police officers who are in mind. Better install lots of CCTV cameras to cover the actions of the policemen and citizens.

Philadelphia at 165 as of yesterday
Chicago likely passed the 200 mark today, with 198 as of yesterday.
NYC is at 106 as of April 15th.

Philadelphia 176 as of yesterday, 11 more than reported 48hrs earlier.
NYC at 110 as of April 25th.
Chicago at 206 as of yesterday.

Incredible how NYC is still far lower than other places numerically and obviously way lower per 100k. So far only a 10% increase in murders YOY. This might change though since we've been experiencing very mild weather with chilly temperatures. Soon it will probably be a sauna here so we'll see what happens.

PHL has been recording a very consistent 1.5+/- murders every day so far this year, before warm weather. I think its safe to say there is a public safety crisis unfolding in Philadelphia as we speak.

As of 4/24, Los Angeles

2021 - 108
2020 - 83
2019 - 80

The start of the year was pretty bad relatively speaking so that really put us behind the 8 ball so to speak, but its calmed down a bit over the last few weeks.

Chicago and Philly are a big mess. Somethings gotta be done asap

What kind of answer are you expecting from this question? Do you have the answer to "what's going on in Chicago"? I mean, they have more murders than New York, with like a third of its population...

I think what's happening in Philadelphia is largely what's happening in cities across the country. Poor, criminally engaged people are killing each other. I'm sure there's a 'tale of 2 Philadelphias' that could be told, just like with Chicago.

^^Not really, the murders are not overly concentrated to any specific area at least. There are shootings and murders in the Center City area in front of trendy restaurants, ect of random people.

Maybe a good majority of the victims are part of organized crime, but it seems that more and more innocent people are getting caught in the crossfire. Thats exactly why this is a problem for everyone, not just the ''others'' that some people think should be allowed to do whatever they want.

i can't speak for philly, but chicago's violence is overwhelmingly concentrated in the west side and south side black ghettoes.

Roughly 75% of chicago's homicides thus far this year have occurred in only 15 of the city's 77 community areas (red and orange on the map below).

here are the locations for all chicago homicides through the first 4 months of this year:

source: https://heyjackass.com/2021-homicide-map/

now, violence certainly can, and does, occur ANYWHERE in chicago, but as the map above clearly shows, it is nowhere close to evenly spread across the entire city at large.

What kind of answer am I looking for? Maybe one that is locally informed on the situation?

People killing each other happens every year. The murder rate and locations of murders in Philadelphia are rather concerning. I would like a local perspective.

Portland has 32 murders so far, compared to 4 or 5 at this same point last year (right before the murder rate exploded for 2020). There is pretty clearly an active gang-war going on.
