The Suns Move Threat from Dan Issel's Perspective...

...and a possible effort to land them in Louisville if Sarver was ever serious about moving them.

Not to mention, if the Suns do move elsewhere in the valley, it wouldn't change the fact that the arena still needs to be renovated. The city would then have to foot the entire bill instead of just a portion.
Very good point.

Didn't the city float around a proposal of some kind for a possible mall/residential conversion for Talking Stick if the Suns were to get a new arena built a couple of years ago?

Third embarrassing night in a row for the Suns... I thought this trade deal was a joke when I heard about it!

Quote:
As silly as that sounds -- and it is as ridiculous as it gets -- the embarrassment is on none other than the executives leading these franchises. For something that seemed to be a done deal -- only for it to not go through because highly-paid executives at the highest possible profession can't properly communicate details of a trade -- fall through in the span of less than an hour over a disagreement over two bit role players is something that feels like straight out of a reality TV show.

I think Nowakowski mentioned it, but I don't remember any discussion beyond that.

Coyotes are in the final phases of selling the team to new ownership, supposedly.

I am concerned about this. Very little attention from media.

Wondering if Bob Parsons is involved. He bought Westgate this summer - I’m sure he’d want to protect his investment by keeping the Coyotes there. He claimed to have ‘big plans’ for the area.

This was pure speculation and there is no supporting evidence to suggest they would move to Houston.

According to media reports on the sale, they are wanting to stay in the Phoenix area: http://www.sportingnews.com/us/nhl/n...018sshwxqg7gqi

The City of Phoenix has put together a very good information page on the arena renovation with a very informative Q&A. Probably worth the read if would like more clarification on what's all involved, the costs, economic impact, etc.

Love the transparency! Really informative in terms of where dollars are allocated. Didnt know the Suns invested that much in the beginning, makes sense for the city to pay more now.

I'm glad they are doing this. It's important to let people know that the money is coming from tourism, and that the funds aren't ones that would go towards fixing potholes or hiring the police.

I agree. Not sure if it’ll make a difference. Its an off cycle vote - and people who vote in those have given all our sports teams trouble for decades over new arenas. Its their favorite kind of NIMBYism other than fighting any structure over 50ft tall going up miles away from them...

I was obviously speculating as I don't trust a word that the Coyotes say.

To me 'Phoenix area' means indian land if they do stay in AZ.

Putting arena renovation costs into context

With the recent announcement that Seattle is getting a new NHL franchise there's interesting news about their arena.

http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/2...ttle-nhl-arena
Quote:
With team secured, Seattle begins work on arena

The cost now is $850 million for the new arena at Seattle Center, according to Oak View Group CEO Tim Leiweke, with construction expected to get started almost immediately. That's an increase of $200 million from the initial projections for the privately financed project, but the principals involved believe the increased investment is part of making the new building one of the top arenas in the country.
This is a total renovation to the old Key Arena where the Seattle NBA team played before moving to OKC. Their expansion fee to the NHL is $650 million. They also plan to build a separate practice facility which Sarver has indicated he also wants to do. Admittedly this is all owner funded.
Quote:
By the time the entirety of all the projects and investments in the franchise is realized with the team's first game -- arena, expansion fee, practice facility and other costs -- bringing the franchise to Seattle could end up running in the neighborhood of $2 billion.
I'd say Phoenix is being presented with a more than reasonable deal. The only thing better would be for a 'rich uncle' to own both the NHL and NBA franchises and pay for their own new arena. Not happening.

And yes Greta gave me my laugh of the day.

I certainly hope this is only a rumor:

Quote:
Are the Arizona Diamondbacks looking to the South in their stadium search? The answer from my understanding is “Yes”.
Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park(formerly Firebird Raceway) is exploring moving further down 1-10 and the Diamondbacks new stadium would be built at the existing 600 acre track location just south of the soon to be completed San Tan 202 Freeway extension by Gila River Casino. Yes, the 101-202 Loop on the NE corner in Tempe could still be an option. Both locations would be great for the Valley, not so much for downtown Phoenix. Stay tuned…

Brad Cesmat is truly an absolutely wonderful guy in real life. But I wouldn't take his 'insider' tips at face value - unless it's highschool football...

Saying this is a rumor is even being generous.

Looking at the map this makes little sense to me; well maybe a little (as I suggested).

My understanding is the Dbacks are having 'heat maps' done to determine where fans and season ticket holders come from. This is what Atlanta did before deciding where to move to which has worked out nicely for them.
