Those are all great attempts Cal, but I just don't think Toronto is a city of canyons. It's just my opinion but if Toronto had stuff like my quick redo of one of your bay street shots below, then I would agree.

Of course Toronto has urban canyons, they just aren't as "grand" or massive as NYC for obvious reasons. But of course a growing city will continue to have more as time progresses.

This one of francely57's seems the most canyon-like to me. Nice even building heights on either side of the street, plus the illusion that the buildings carry on to the horizon.

Don't ask me whaat's up with that lady... I went to the curb to take the picture and all of a sudden she thinks this is America's Next Top Model (Geriatric Edition) taking pictures and shit.. good loard. And the kid on the right too.. she also wanted to get in the shot.. went chest to chest with her when I was catching the subway out..

I love all the shots Cal, you're getting closer.... (And please don't be insulted), however after studying many canyon shots of New York I see three things in common:

1) Perspective - Don't stand in the canyon to take its picture. Stand farther outside it and use high powered telephoto. This compresses the perspective and adds to the illusion of density and height.

2) Lighting - Either late day or early morning are always good. The long shadows exaggerate distances and height. Overcast days are also good, with interesting cloud formations. It adds to the urban gloom.

3) Altitude - For this you have to finagle your way into mid-floor offices of a building to capture the best angles. (I'm sure you can use your suave, debonair, machismo to charm some pretty receptionist somewhere.)

Again, a canyon doesn't need to look like those in NY (ie highest caliber in the world) in order to be considered a canyon. That's like not accepting pictures of medium and small mountains as being real mountains because you compare them all to the Himalayas.

IMO, any corridor lined mostly with highrises or skyscrapers giving a deep/dark/canyon-like effect can be called and urban canyon. Some are just more impressive than others.
