Construction to resume at South Loop tower designed by Helmut Jahn
Fueled by a new $304.5 million construction loan, the developers who shut down work in spring 2020 plan to begin again this month.

The developers who stopped construction on a 73-story South Michigan Avenue tower in the early months of the pandemic plan to restart this month, with a new $304.5 million construction loan in hand.

Construction began in late 2019 at the site of tower, known as 1000M and designed by the late Helmut Jahn. By June 2020, work at the site was shut down. The developers cited the pandemic at the time, although Crain’s reported that work at other towers was still going on.

This morning, developers Time Equities, JK Equities and Oak Capitals announced they’ll re-start construction and have closed on a $304.5 million construction loan from Goldman Sachs Bank USA and Deutsche Bank Wealth Management. The announcement says construction should be complete within 36 months.

^ Soooo, now that they've closed on a loan, can we officially change the status of this project to 'Under Construction'?

I definitely like the parapet/crown design of this iteration better than before..

Also, I know that the night rendering probably deliberately tones down the rest of the City's lighting, but it does remind me that Chicago is not very well illuminated at night.

Wish we had more lighting on our skyline like Dallas does. Really livens up the nighttime skyline. And there should be some digital billboards near downtown. Don't gotta go full Times Square, but it would definitely add to the experience.

And are these new renderings a change from the previous? Looks a bit taller and the design looks improved.

Hard to say exactly, but the design does look slightly different (the crown especially) from what JAHN showed to the Plan Commission in June.

Looks like they cut out the rising lights going up the sides and settled for a crown lighting!

Intresting....But yeah i'm also liking the new design...should play nicely with Nema!

I much prefer good crown lighting over lights on the side of the building. Glad to see that's in the design now.

It does look like the crown is much improved over the the prior redesign, which is great to see. Perhaps they'll ensure this gets well-built since it might also be Jahn's crowning work?

CTBUH Update

The CTBUH is now showing 1000M as Under Construction and again showing the height as 805 feet from their previous listed height of 788 feet. This is a great addition for the South Loop and Chicago.

After so many years this is like a bonus coming back from the dead. Over 800 ft and
- although maybe not perfect - still a very modern design. Glad to see this finally rise!

So great to see this one come back from the brink. One less missing tooth in the S Mich Ave row. Lot of opportunity left for some signature towers on that end. I do pine for some aspects of the original design, maybe not the crown but remember those cantilevered floors, but, that'll do donkey, that'll do.

Also.....CAP THOSE TRACKS!!!!
