Totally agree. But regardless, it will be a hell of an achievement to build the first tower surpassing 1 KM in height!

I think this has little to do with the kind of building we are getting. In China it is demand that drive's the building and it's design. The giant mass thing seems to be good for the middle East because they are building a trophy.

The articles I've seen imply it's been on hold since at least May of 2016, though I think SOME work has been done in the last year. It was originally supposed to be completed this year or next year and that has since been pushed out to 2020 last I heard.

If you watch the video posted further up on this page it looks like they accomplished a lot from May to Dec. 1, 2016. The video only goes up to 12/1/2016. I see no evidence it's on hold. As for being done this year or next wasn't that changed a long time ago? It's rather clear they're nowhere near being done.

Just going from the news articles I've seen.

If you go to the 1:35 mark of the video you reference, you can see that they've accomplished very little vertical work between July and December of last year.

Yeah and by "contractor problems" they mean "we weren't paying the contractor so they stopped working":

Mr Jomah said the delay was “due to a number of factors – mainly to the contractor”.
“Basically, it was a financial problem. Until we secured a loan from the bank … to make sure that the cash flow for the contractor is more stable for the time schedule.”

Jeddah Tower Climbs Higher in New Photos

We last checked in on the Jeddah Tower, the 167-storey megatall that is next in line to become the world's tallest building. Back then, the tower's structure was over 20 percent complete. In the latest photos from the site, the ever-rising core has substantially jumped to around the 50-floor mark. And it still has a long journey ahead: the tower will eventually top the 1,000-metre milestone, becoming the first structure on the planet to climb over a kilometre into the sky.
