Thats a massive list and a lot of data but a lot of the lower tier cites have not heavy or light rail. Besides busses what is included in public transportation?

Taxi's, Uber? Just wondering where this data is coming from. I know it is from data census but what is their definition? Does car pooling count?

The categories the census uses, as far as I know, are:

Drive Alone
Carpool
Public Transit
Bicycle
Walk
Work from Home
Taxi, motorcycle or other

Presumably Uber would be counted in the latter, although it's possible that this study added those to public transit.

It's % of workers, not % of residents, and I believe Naperville is the busiest station on the busiest Metra line. Even though that area is pretty sprawly, I could see a high % of commuters using Metra.

Only about half of people are employed though (children, retired, unemployed, stay-at-home, etc.), so I'm not sure that using commuter modal share is the best proxy for an area's relative transit orientation.

Route 59, on naperville's extreme western edge, is actually Metra's busiest non-downtown station, and the naperville station itself is #2.

Naperville is very highly focused around downtown workers who use metra, but both of those stations are surrounded by absolutely gargantuan park and ride lots, so most of the people are still driving their cars to those stations.

So napervilles's transit commute share % is not functionally the same as minneapolis' or jersey city's, even though they're all around 11%.

Jersey City commute share is nearly the same as NYC, so I think there was an error in posting the numbers.

Presumably Uber would be counted in the latter, although it's possible that this study added those to public transit.
I don't see how Uber would be counted as public transit; it's no different than a private taxi company, apart from their not being subject to DOT laws. And by their own definition, their drivers aren't even their employees... they even use their own personal vehicles. I'm thinking Uber is "other."

Well, I get 49% for Jersey City and 55% for New York, however, I welcome your fresh set of eyes, maybe you'll come up with a different figure...

If it's by workers working in each city as opposed to residents, then intuitively at least, that sounds right. Most workers in downtown Jersey City would be getting there by PATH, commuter trains, or ferry, no?

Right, those numbers make sense.

Read the previous posts, as it seems Jersey City is listed twice, once with the 49%, and then with 11%.

Yes, but this is commute share by city residents, not workers.

I imagine the transit share of inbound commuters to JC is not that different from NYC, but obviously many of these workers, in both cases, aren't working in the respective cores.

I wonder how privatized and informal transit are counted.

Obviously in the developing world, most non-auto transit is private or informal, but even in the developed world, it isn't uncommon. Northern NJ, especially, has a ton of private buses and vans, and it's also common in Chinese, West Indian and Hasidic Jewish neighborhoods in the Outer Boroughs.

If you walk down Flatbush or Nostrand Avenues in southern Brooklyn you'll see more private vans/buses than MTA buses. These are colloquially called "dollar vans" and are immigrant-run competitors to the public system.

Sorry, I goofed. I wish the census bureau made it possible for users to create lists through their site--then human error would be less of a factor.

LA numbers are abysmal, and perfectly reflect how car-dependent is its built environment and urban culture. These numbers are one of the largest reasons I left: It would take two generations until LA develops an urban culture commensurate with its size. New developments are just lipstick on a pig, with their huge underground garages and curb-cuts. After living in Berlin and Tokyo, LA is so underwhelming. 4.7% of commuters use transit in LA, vs 1.9% for Houston. Splitting hairs about not mattering.

Yeah, here's a map someone made on the many different routes for the jitneys. Many of these routes have less than 1-minute headways during rush hour. I wouldn't be surprised if each region on the map carries around 100,000 commuters or more (at least the Jersey side). I too wonder if these are even counted.

EDIT: According to this article just the two easternmost Brooklyn and Queens routes transport 120,000 commuter a day with about 850 vans. There is no corresponding passenger number for the Jersey routes, but there are whopping 6,500 registered vans there according to wiki.

Interesting note: the routes west of the Hudson river are usually called jitneys, and east of the Hudson are called dollar vans.

diamondpark, thanks as always for putting these lists together. Question - do your numbers include walkers?
