Texas State construction totals more than half-billion dollars
April 23, 2012
San Marcos Mercury by ANDY SEVILLA

Quote:
As Texas State University continues setting enrollment records and is quickly exceeding projected population numbers, it’s undertaking a massive construction program totaling more than $600 million.

Texas State presently has at least 25 construction projects in various stages of development, according to Texas State’s Office of Facilities Planning, Design, and Construction Project Status Report. The project status report was compiled in February and will be updated in May, just before the Texas State Board of Regents meeting scheduled that month, said Nancy Nusbaum, Associate Vice President for Finance and Support Services.

“All of this construction is definitely a sign that we are growing and that we’re trying to improve the conditions of facilities for our students, faculty, and staff,” Nusbaum said, although she cautioned that future expansion beyond what is in the master plan may be difficult as the university’s financial resources are dwindling.

Projects under construction now total just under $300 million. Those are in addition to $150 million in projects completed in recent years including a new Student Recreation Center and two parking garages.

The most expensive of these is the Performing Arts Complex (PAC) totaling $83,243,646, according to the report. The center consists of four major components: a recital hall and theatre, a parking garage, a south chill plant, and street and ground improvements. The Recital Hall will accommodate 300 seats and the Theatre will have 400 seats. The parking garage, which will be erected on University Drive, will have a capacity for 455 cars.

...

Texas State projects under construction now include (with budgeted cost):

Bobcat Stadium – North Side Complex, $33 million
Brogdon Hall Renovations, $7 million
Center for Research Commercialization, $6.95 million
Commons Dining Hall and Renovation, $7.2 million
Electrical Infrastructure Upgrades, $11.8 million
Housing and Residence Life Office Building, $2.1 million
Lampasas Hall Renovation, $3.3 million
North Campus Housing Complex, $46.1 million
Performing Arts Complex, $83.2 million
Round Rock Higher Education Center #2 – Nursing Building, $36 million
South Campus Utility Upgrades, $6 million
Tomas Rivera Drive Relocation and Student Center Drive Realignment, $8.7 million
Undergraduate Academic Center, $47.7 million

Projects being designed include:

Bobcat Trail Mall Redevelopment, $5.48 million
West Campus Residence Life Housing, $56.1 million

Projects in various stages of planning include:

Alkek Library Learning Commons, $2.5 million,
Alumni Visitors Center – Phase One, $4.9 million,
Engineering and Science Building, $82.3 million,
Music Building, $56.7 million,
Psychology Renovation, $8.59 million
River Center Education and Research Facility, $7 million
Round Rock Higher Education Center #3 – Health Professions 1, $48.8 million
Round Rock Higher Education Center #4 – Health Professions 2, $31.9 million
Utility Upgrades Bobcat Trail, $3.5 million

S&W Bone and Joint Institute breaks ground

Quote:
While the Bone and Joint Institute has provided expert care to patients for decades, that care will soon be enhanced and expanded with the construction of a new, stand-alone building on the Temple campus, which will combine all of the orthopedic resources and specialties in one location.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on May 10 on the Temple campus. Scott & White officials and community leaders were on hand to celebrate the construction of the newest Scott & White facility.

In our new state-of-the-art facility, complete medical, surgical and rehabilitative care will be coordinated and delivered in one location by experts who diagnose and treat disease and injury of the muscles, bones, joints, ligaments and tendons that help our bodies move. Medical and surgical specialists include physiatrists, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, radiologists, orthopedic surgeons and plastic surgeons.

Ground breaking held for higher education center in Hutto

Quote:
By Beth Wade May 22, 2012

Officials from the City of Hutto, Temple College, Texas State Technical College Waco and other community members gathered May 22 for the ground breaking of the new East Williamson County Higher Education Center campus. “This day seems as though it has been a long time coming,” said Scott Martinez, executive director of the Hutto Economic Development Corp., citing all of the steps the group went through to get the collaboration in Hutto. “When you consider all that, two years really wasn’t that long.” The more than 100,000-square-foot building is scheduled to open in fall 2013 near Toll 130 and CR 108, said Jan Osburn, director of marketing and communications with Texas State Technical College.

Update: possible Schlitterbahn development in Cedar Park.

(Not sure if this warrants mention here.)

Seems like the Volente Beach guy "updates" the local press on fund-raising efforts once or twice a year. The outlook has recently turned positive.

The original plan would be built in four phases at a cost of $360 million. Redmond says that scared away investors when he and his son went searching in 2010.

"Now, things have started turning around,” Redmond said. “It looks like the venture guys and the investors are looking at wanting to do this park."

That could come with help from Cedar Park, but only after the new plans are in place.
Cedar Park Economic Development Director Phil Brewer hopes those new ideas will come soon.

"It will be a game changer for the community. One of our council goals and visions is to become a destination city,” he said. “This will certainly go a long way in making Cedar Park a destination city."

Brewer said the site could be as massive as the Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels.

But without the natural springs feeding it and all the trees. I'm going to drive out to the property thursday to try to get and idea of what it might look like. Austin will still be the largest city without a water park because Cedar Park will be getting it. Glad it may happen but wish it was happening closer to DT Austin so Austin hotels would get the business.

I'm looking forward to seeing what other plans are in the works around the Circuit of the Americas. we may see some sort of theme park or water park in that area.

Drove out to COTA yesterday..The project is looking great...That first turn is interesting...But, alas, the area is a disaster...There is a business in Elroy that is a grocery or used tire store(duh) or something else that is now sporting a new handmade sign saying Gran Prix general store..When the folks from Monaco see this place they may leave before the race.

Yea I agree that area is not much to look at right now, but what is good about this project is it will transform that whole area which is badly needing it. Even residents in the area would like to see improvement. I think by next year we will see several large scale projects as well as road improvements taking shape. The good news is visitors from other countries don't have far to go to be in Downtown Austin and other more visually appealing areas of the city and county.

Also the vast majority of spectators will come in/out via shuttles. Which means maybe CoTA can strategically "stage" the route in so it doesn't look so bad from the shuttles.

Although, I suspect foreign visitors will just see it as stereotypical Texas countryside. Remember when Bush was in office and they'd broadcast from Crawford? They always used a shot with old dilapidated farm equipment in the background (basically junk). So I doubt the world will be shocked.

I really don't care what they think of the area out there. I mean sure it would be great if it was better, but it isn't and it won't be unless the race survives a good 15-25 years.

The vast majority of those going to the race will be using shuttles from inside Austin or San Antonio to reach the race. And those that don't use shuttles from inside Austin/SA will will probably be driving or taking a helo from either Austin or Lake Travis.

This area will not be the only part of Austin they will see. I imagine most all of the visitors will get to experience Austin and what it offers. Given that the track is built in one of the worst areas of Austin, it really can't be hidden or swept under the rug.

Better access would help the area greatly, even during times of no scheduled events

Sparetime fun center will open in early 2013 in west Temple

Quote:
Here’s something that will get Temple residents — especially bowlers — smiling from ear to ear. A new entertainment complex, featuring 24 lanes for the sport, laser tag and much more, plans to start construction soon on about 5 acres of land on Loop 205.

Temple isn't really in Austin's metro area.

I know, but there is so much going on in the Temple, Killeen area. Kevin can you make a sub forum for the Temple- Killeen area and Waco.

One important relevant fact...as Temple, Killeen and Waco continue to grow and add new businesses, there are less reasons for those residents to travel here to shop. I know this first hand. Maybe it won't effect Austin as much, but RR and Georgetown will be effected. At least 10 to 15 percent of our customers come from that area.

Creating new sub-forums isn't really one of my duties on the forum. And also we usually add new sections to the forum based on how much traffic a city or region produces. One good way to encourage that would be to post content that has to do with Waco, and post it in the main Texas section and create a projects and construction thread for it there. That could act as a way of attracting some people from Waco or Temple, etc, to visit the forum.
