UC Hastings, Greystar break ground on Civic Center student housing project
By Ted Andersen – Digital Editor, San Francisco Business Times
Oct 15, 2020, 7:47am PDT Updated 9 minutes ago

UC Hastings College of Law and South Carolina developer Greystar said Wednesday that they have broken ground on a $282 million mixed-use student housing project on the edge of the Tenderloin.

The 14-story, 356,000-square-foot building at 198 McAllister St. — designed by architect Perkins and Will — will include a mix of residential units with 667 beds, 50,000 square feet of office and academic space equipped with classrooms, an auditorium, trial and appellate courtrooms and 8,000 square feet of retail.

The project is expected to open in 2023 and will house about 670 graduate students, primarily from UC Hastings Law and UC San Francisco. The units will feature studios, one- and two-bedroom units . . . .

198 McAllister St. is Phase 2 in the college's plan to redevelop its two-block campus near Civic Center. The first phase finished in March with completion of the six-story Cotchett Law Center at 333 Golden Gate Ave. Phase 3 is slated for 2023 to 2025 and will focus on renovating UC Hastings’ 28-story Tower at 100 McAllister St.

The price tag for the two McAllister Street sites is about $450 million, all of which could be covered by tax-exempt bonds. Rehabilitating 100 McAllister St. will include a seismic upgrading of the 90-year-old building, plus adapting the unused “great hall” inside . . . .

^^What I am personally looking forward to is Phase 3 of the project in which they renovate the deco tower at 100 McAllister. Hope they do a good job of that.

100 McAllister - Decades ago I was in what was once the church within the building, for a play. The whole part of the space was painted black, therefore I could not tell how much was visible them. Yes, it will be interesting to see if the space is open to the public.

No. Trinity is Arquitectonica out of Miami (with offices in LA): https://arquitectonica.com/architect...trinity-place/
They look nothing alike, but another of their projects was The Infinity.

This is Perkins & Will: https://perkinswill.com/project/uc-h...ampus-housing/

Courtesy of gilly from the Trinity thread. Is anyone else seeing this or is it just me? Similar height, massing, shape, layered right angle cutouts.

^^The surface treatment is quite different and the features that resemble Trinity, the cut-outs, are fairly common in buildings such as the Salesforce building on the northeast corner of 3rd & Mission and the 5M project.

Actually, Arquitectonica helped popularize them so in that sense there's a connection. They got most famous for their giant square holes in buildings (a feature that was "value engineered" out of Trinity).

I certainly wouldn’t say they look nothing alike and see multiple similarities. Yes, I was aware they are designed by different architectural firms. Arquitectonica also designed Lumina, 33 Tehama, Linea, Avalon Mission Bay, Olume, One Mission Bay, Austin, and 655 Folsom. All are here in San Francisco, some good and others not so much.

I think Pedestrian was saying that Arquitectonica designed both Trinity and Infinity but they look nothing alike despite being the same firm.

That’s not the way I read it.

Don't feel bad! It's not just you. The effect of pulling apart of the upper portion from the lower is one that Arquitectonica often uses.

Yes.

Sorry, but Andrew was right. I was saying I don't think the 2 Arquitectonica projects don't look much alike. I'll agree with many that the UC building looks a lot more like Trinity than Infinity does. But again, I think the surface treatment makes a lot of difference.

But in the end, it's a point only us geeks would debate.

That is the back side of Snodgrass Hall, which is being demolished to be replaced by 198 McAllister.
