Portland is probably approaching 50 murders so far this year, with at least 5 more in the past few days. Most appear to be gang-related shootings with no arrests made afterwards. The police seem to have lost control of the streets.

Even with homicides going up, this still isn't nearly as bad as the 90's. In 1991 NYC saw over 2,600 murders in that year alone.

anecdotally, as someone with multiple jobsites in east st. louis over the years (drove down kingshighway and state street today)...its overall extremely quiet, and the people much more chill than other areas. obviously theres beefing, etc and its reputation precedes it but it just doesn't seem that bad. physically it’s been apocalyptically ravaged by disinvestment and deindustrialization of course.

So is it just sort of the wild west (wild north)? Rough and tumble oil workers and loggers or whatever settling beefs with violence? Or is it more a story of poverty and desperation?

The overall murder rate for the nation is still way down(nearly half of what is was in 1980) and NYC is not doing badly at all compared to the early 90's, but some cities have already broken their all time homicide records with months to go in the year. I believe Jackson Ms. and Memphis are in this group. Cbus is way up in Ohio(latest press release from Cbus police is 123 as of yesterday-the record is 143 and we will probably break it) and Indy is doing horribly and may have already broken the all time record and if not they are close I think.

Some cities are just getting hit really hard. Jackson is just a few murders short of 100 with a population of less than 170,000 now. It seems some cities are up a bit, some up a lot, and some are really way way up.

Memphis hit an all-time record this year in terms of the number of murders:

City councilman pushing for ‘Murder Task Force’ in Memphis

Quote:
This year 230 people have been killed in homicides in Memphis. The number means the 2016 homicide record was broken with three more months in the year.

Seattle has 49 murders as of October 18:

Seattle police report record-setting homicides in 2020

Quote:
On Thursday, a person was shot and killed in a North Seattle apartment complex parking lot, making it the 49th murder in the city this year.
That ties the totals for 1997 and 1998, and is drawing closer to the all-time record of 69 murders set in 1994.

Isolated and impoverished native communities make up a much larger percentage of a total provincial population of 39,000 (Nunavut).

Portland had 3 separate murders overnight (Friday, October 24 into Saturday, October 25), none of which have been solved so far, raising the annual total to at least 43.

Portland's all-time highest murder total was 66, during the year 1987. But the city was smaller back then, so as a matter of rate, that would be 111 murders. But, 43 murders is already the highest since 1997 (46).

St Louis reached an all time high back in September with 194 homicides. Currently the city has had 214 homicides in a city of only 300,000. Insane

With the recent violence in Philadelphia, the number of murders stands at 404 as of yesterday. 42% higher than last year.

Philadelphias all time murder number was 505 back in the 90s, it's possible it could be broken due to the unrest in the city and general lawlessness and impunity in the country.

In your opinion, that's only a matter of a tougher police enforcement or there are other underlying causes as well (e.g. lack of career prospects, good jobs, etc.)?

The primary cause of violence is a person’s social network.

In Chicago the biggest predictor of whether a person will commit or be victim of a shooting is how many personal ties to other gunmen they have. It’s a much much higher correlation than poverty, employment, education, race or other commonly cited factors.

What happens in a crime spike is that a violent act by a criminal is imitated by other members of their immediate social group who are then imitated by the 2nd degree peers and so on. The job of law enforcement is to break that chain as soon as possible. Whether by arresting a criminal or just letting potential offenders know they’re being monitored. Employment, school, church are just other less punitive ways to break the chain and build more positive networks.

What’s been happening in recent years is that social media is speeding up this cycle too fast for traditional social controls to react. People online see someone like them riot in Seattle over a dumb statue, next day 10 other cities are seeing riots over statues. Same with homicide.

Sometimes the only way out of a crime wave is generational change when violent behavior becomes passé and uncool. That’s likely the main reason for the crime drop off following the 90s. Otherwise cities can act during a lull such as during Winter and step up law enforcement.
